Here are some tips for keeping your computer running smoothly:
1)Backup, backup, backup is the only word to remember. So backup data to
floppies, zip disks, CD-RWS etc. Time to backup is when you create
something you can’t afford to lose. Don’t wait until tomorrow.

    2) Run Scandisk and Defragment at least once a month. This will keep your
hard drive healthy and prevent crashes. Alternatively, purchase a disk
utility and use it to keep your hard drive healthy.

    3) Never unplug peripherals from the computer when it is powered up.
Unplugging with the power on, can short out the connector socket or the
    motherboard.

Do you have anything to add here.

Add a power surge protector to avoid being fried! Happen to me when the power supply of my PC decided to burn with over-voltage.

run > msconfig > startup > uncheck every unnecessary program that loads at start up.

Get rid of the little shortcut bar next to the start button, makes the desktop load faster

want longer life : dont run your PC :p

want to run but still longer life well use a powerful AC and keep temp at 16 degrees F or 10 degree centigrade :p

For backup? Use remote backup and keep all backup in different buildings and preferably in different cities.

For virus protection: don't use internet and external HDDs : just develop and use your own software.

Want to do regular updates? dont use Windows OS.

hmm can't follow my advice? No problem just follow the tips from other users ;)

    yes, here:
don't connect to the internet, don't ever save anything, don't let anyone ever use your computer, and never turn it on. It will stay in tip top shape for years!
