Tips For Getting More Clicks For Google Search Ads?

    Hey guys,

I've got a couple of campaigns running on AdWords right now with a budget of $40/day. All of my keywords are set at around the $0.10 - $0.30/CPC mark.

One campaign is maxing out its $10/day maximum, but it's the $30/day section that is bugging me. I can't get this section to max out even though the topic gets a decent amount of queries. I've tried about six or seven different ads, but can't get a decent CTR. I'd love to max this campaign out without having to use the content network, as I'm only using the search network.

I've been researching the subject for about a week now and I've read up on Google's help pages (how to improve quality score, improve click thru, etc.) but they aren't helping.

Does anyone have solid tips that could help the rest of us generate a higher CTR, even if we're not using both search AND content at the same time?

Are you A/B testing your ads?
If this is a new campaign, your might want to put some higher bids for the first 2 weeks as Google seems to favor campaigns which have a track record.

You might want to read the following post about it:

I know what you mean... My max cpc is set to .50 and I've set my daily budget to $150 and I'm only spending a few dollars a day. I guess I have a lot of work to do optimizing my campaign.

Wow, I never thought of that. Perhaps I should try out some images or videos. That's excellent advice. :)

    I'm A/B/C/D/E testing my ads. ;)

You really think that will work? If I pump my ads up to like $0.50-$0.75/click for the first two weeks and then lower them back down to $0.15-0.30/click for the rest of the time, you think Google will favor my ads?

Cause I'd be willing to try. :)

I'll check that post out, too.

How many keywords are you using, if you don't mind me asking?

Its always better to have a high cpc initially for 1 around 1 week and then start lowering it there after based on the Avg cpc for the week

Have you tried the accelerated delivery option? I've had cases where just switching that on made up minor differences in delivery to budget.

Yeah, I use the accelerated delivery option as I'm trying to get all my clicks out as fast as possible. :)

It depends on what you want out of it, in my opinion. If you want to use your budget up as quickly as possible, then accelerated is great. Also, if you want to hit the AM crowd more than the PM crowd, this is your option. Personally, I think your ads will show up more often with this option as well, so I prefer it.

With standard delivery, your ads show up sporadically throughout the day and although you will hit the AM crowd and the PM crowd, you might miss the one search that will bring you the sale; however, if you're just looking for web traffic, I would go with this option. :)

I use standard delivery when using a limited budget and I want to expose people to my ads through out the day. Otherwise I use accelerated

Good info. I operate pretty much the same way if I'm trying to promote an actual website.

If it's a product, I want as many clicks as fast as possible. :)

Ok lets say u went for the accelerated delivery, but how would u know that your ads will be served to the AM crowed and not for the PM gang..???

is it by changing the time period where u want your ads to be showed..?

Well, assuming your ad is maxed out before 12:00pm, accelerated ads would be geared more toward the AM crowd as your daily budget starts over at 12:00am. In contrast, if you aren't paying enough and your ads get displayed every so often, you might as well be selecting the other option.

    That's my logic.

If you're not getting a quality CTR, it's probably indicative of one of the following:

    - Your keywords are good, and are well-targetted but your ad copy(ies) are lousy/not inviting enough. This would be the case if you see a high amount of impressions but low amount of clicks.

    - Conversely, your ad copy could be great, but you're not really using the keywords that most people would search for to be interested in your ad. This would probably show up more like low relative impressions and very few clicks.

    - Otherwise, it's probably a mix of the two - your ad copy could be improved a little, or further separated into different adgroups with more targetted keywords. I find personally that it's usually the former - that I've found good keywords, but my ad copy is really just kind of ho-hum.

As usual, another great reply. Yeah. Those are really good points.

I like to search the keywords I'm bidding on to see what other people use for ads, just to see what grabs my attention.

This helps me to find a good base for building ads.

Obviously I need to spend more time doing that! :)

    Yep, definitely.

Even better, take it to the next level!

Not only can you see what other people are using for ads, but you can also see what works!

For instance, if do a search on day 1, and I see Ad A and Ad B, then I go back a week later and only see Ad B, guess who's making money? ;)

This kind of research is absolutely invaluable when it comes to diving into new niches, too - it gives you a baseline of what you probably need to hit in order to make your ad (and landing page) successful. Learning from others' mistakes is perhaps one of the greatest ways to gain experience out there without wasting your money.
