Tips for a new Mac user

Well, my new iMac is on the way, and I've been a PC user all my life, and I decided to make the switch. I've only tried Macs in stores so I don't know too much about them, but from what I tried I love. Do any of you have some tips for a new Mac user who just made the switch?

My only tips are to get firefox and some extensions (colorzilla, whois checker, google toolbar, etc) and install WAMP (it is an apache server which you can use to test php/cgi scripts). Also try to avoid downloading files straight to your desktop since items are placed randomly in the desktop and are practically impossible to find.

Also, prepare to fall in love with preview, it is the best pdf viewer in the market.

If you are using mighty mouse the wheel gets very dirty and stop working so you have to turn the mouse upside down and spin the wheel with strength.

I think I know what he means. In the iMac I tried in the store yesterday, the wheel gets very grimy and full of shit, so just turn it upside down and spin that sucker until the dirt falls out.

A lot of dirt accumulates under the spinning wheel, I don't know if it is dust or if it is just hand dirt (dead skin, body grease, etc.). When this happens the wheel gets stuck and scrolling has to be done the old-fashioned way until you turn the mouse upside down and spin the wheel until the dirt falls out. I would not suggest this mouse if you are not using a mac since it is not as anatomic as some other mouses out there and the scrolling gets annoying (only when the wheel stops working). However, if you are on a mac, this mouse is great because you can access dashboard like lightning (although you might accidentally open dashboard when trying to scroll) and expose even faster.

I switched last December. One tip I can give is to study a few keyboard short cuts. It will help you get regular stuff done faster.

For instance, you will have this Apple Command button all of a sudden and you won't have a clue what it's for. It's a bit confusing because in many cases it's what the Ctrl key is in Win, but the Mac does have a Ctrl of its own. The Mac's Ctrl becomes what Win's right click is. Etc.

Get a grasp of those keys and it will make you a happy Mac user.

Tips for a new mac user...

Carry your mac to the nearest window and throw it out of it.. ensuring that it smashes in millions of tiny plastic peices until they incorporate the Intel Chip with Windows Vista and change that crappy one click and hold mouse design... absolutely rediculous, although the capabilities of the Mac are much greater when it comes to Mac vs. PC however, if you like gaming, your pretty much SOL

Do you hear that? I think it is your antivirus calling, go scan your pc :p.

I wouldn't be surprised if this became a Mac VS. PC bashing thread.

Just because you're used to something else doesn't make the unknown GUI or way of doing things bad.

G6? Isn't the latest version G5? Anyways, they now have incorporated Intel chips into their computers.

the mighty mouse does have a two-click feature, you no longer have to press control+click since you can use the right-mouse-button (this feature works on the mac and on the pc). It is a great mouse because it allows you to switch back and forth between applications amazingly fast (thanks to expose; you don't have to go the alt+tab route anymore) and allows you to scroll in any direction without having to use those dreaded scroll bars, you just have to be prepared for the occasional cleaning the wheel will need.
