I normally use www.copyscape.com to find thieving bastages who copy my sites, but while looking at some backlinks in Google's Webmaster Tools, I stumbled acrossed a guy who not only copied my content...he left my links intact! I know he didn't realize they were links because they were bold black text (like any other paragraph header). This got me thinking...perhaps I should be including a few hidden links in my content to make it easier to find more theiving bastages. I wouldn't do it for any keyword things, just one word that gets filtered by SE's like "the" or "and" or even a period. One could even have the link point to a script that logged the referrer and the useragent. This would make it easier to distinguish between clicks on legitimate links pointing to your site and bots following a hidden link in a content item. Thoughts?
Let's hope he put it up into related site so you get a backlink, assuming no rel="nofollow" automatically set-up
I remember have read something about base uri as meta tag no get back to your site most search engines. Not sure how to implement it though.
@Tim_Myth I've read about that base URI, too. Seems to be quite popular recently. Probably you can spend some time to research it and then implement it to get, just as YourContent offered, most search engines back to your site.
i use this to check for stolen content from my website every week without fail, and nearly every week there is a person there who has stolen my content!
Dig deeper into this forum, there are old posts providing different options to find plagiarism and stolen content.
Wouldnt all the scraper need to do is use php's str_replace function to remove any <a and </a> tags? I'd recommend using it for the unsneaky scrapers, but once people start doing it, it's a matter of time before scrapers adapt. Even better: Add your own personal "code" to the text and search for it in google. 143129scraperdetect Then search google for "143129scraperdetect" -site:mysite.com and find the scraper?
My concern with this kind of thing is "what can you do if you find someone that is copying?". If they're in another country (which is more than likely), you are surely dealing with an international law problem. Is such a problem worth the hassle?
wow... thank you for the information. Content is one of the most important components in a blog. I am a newbie and this is great for me to know !
I've got a problem having someone copying content from my blog to his blogger blog then i contacted blogger staff and they said i have to file a DCMA and fax it with my ID and they made it harder for me to claim my own rights while it took the other guy just 1 minute to copy my content and this isn't fair for me at all...
Great instrument to prevent plagiarism. Thank you for your share, Kemus - your bit of advice is of great value to me
I feel your pain - my site was copied today less than 15 days after launch! I feel honored, but I was very frustrated. I found the offender by searching for my website in google "firelead" and they came up on the front page! I sent them a cease and desist letter and they stopped but Google still has the content indexed!
If Google de-index a site at all. Speaking from experience, they seem very inactive when in comes to that.
