Time taken to get decent membership numbers?

Now i know that this would vary for every different type of site but i run

    www.aussietravellersforums.com.au

and was wondering what some rough stats are on membership? Like how long would it normally take to reach 100 members, 1000 members etc etc

I have been submitting to as many directories as i can, i have set up a face book group, and have links in my signatures in other forums...

    # of members is not nearly as important as # of contributing members. You can get 1000 members easily, but making people come back, and getting people to contribute actively, is the hard part.

There isn't a rough figure man. It all depends.

It really depends on how much time you are willing to put into it. Things are always going to be slow in the start. I was able to get my forum up and running in about a months time.

Why is almost everybody talking about "time" needed to get the results, and not the promotional "effort"?
Well, every kind of effort takes time to turn into results.
Still, I would say it is rather meaningful, consistent effort does the "trick", not just time on its own...
In a way, a good effort can decrease the amount of time needed to reach the goal, but without it -
time will be indefinite. Am I right or wrong with this one?

Well perhaps i should expand the question to:

how much time did it take you to get regular contributors and how many hrs per day did you put in?

I got 500 members in 24 hours of launching with about 5-6 hours of work, and probably 50 of those members are still active, but since then the forum is at over 3000 members with 200-300 active.

But seriously, that is not helpful in anyway. They're just numbers. I created a very specific forum about a specific game and was simply active on popular forums in the niche and there was some luck involved.

I recommend you check out communityspark.com, they have some good advice.

when you are just starting a forum then try do all the post first. People like to participate on forums with other members answering their query. I had nothing to with some time frame, it has everything to with how much time you are putting to it.
