Three Way Linking: Are you doing it?

I just wanted to get a feel for how many people find three way linking to be important. I had a request for this feature with phpLD, and we added it today for the free and paid version.

How many of you are actively using a 3-way strategy?

I don't do it mainly because there is no way of finding out for sure that the person you are dealing with actually owns the site.

Ex: I could ask you for a "3 way link" to www.mysite.com. Then, I search "link:www.yoursite.com" in Google or Alltheweb or something. Then, I pick a random site from the site and tell you that that's the link I am giving you in return. Unless you have a newer site with only a couple of dozen links, it is highly unlikely that you will remember (or even know) all the sites who link to your site. So, I could in effect go through all the sites and pick one that's a high PR. You might think I am giving you a new link from one of my sites, but it would just be a link that you already have. And I have come across a lot of dodgy webmasters unfortunately, and have seen a lot of different dirty tactics employed by them.

This is why, I only link back to the site where the link is coming from. Just my 2 cents ....

It can be harder to track when others are doing 3 way linking unless your system directly tracks it.

Personally I have a few of them but not overly active in that area. Article submission, forums, recip links and good content have been my largest link building methods.

I'm doing some 3 way links but I'm not putting much focus on it. I still prefer reciprocal and other means of one way links.

I am also doing the same. For one way links I prefer directory submissions in my own manually researched 1700 directories. (see sign).

Three way links are not more valuable than reciprocal links, or one way links.

One way links is the best. :)

I find it quite hard too... So I keep doing it the old fashioned way.. Reciprocals and other means of one way links..

Would I like to do more 3 way links? Yes.

Do I do many 3 way links? No.

Like others have mentioned its hard to do and hard to track. I like to keep my outgoing links relevant as well as the incoming links and this means having all 3 sites being about the same theme.

A relevant reciprocal must still stand up well against a non-relevant 3 way link I believe.
