Well editing is what directories are all about. I see in your article you say: You've certainly approved, but I don't see any signs of editing.
I am now editing titles, grammar, and more. Also, I got an infraction for posting an identical thread. I posted the first one, went back to my user cp, and it did not show up. I am having that issue with everything. PM's and all are not updating for a long time. I did not post two threads on purpose. I am not using any PPC. I have not paid for any advertising. I appreciate the replys. I could not post the link. It would not let me do to lack of time on account. Thanks everyone.
swedal has given sound advice and constructive critisicm, take it on-board, you are being pointed in the right direction. Quality is about the edits you make and the sites you accept. That is a nice template, good luck in the directory world.
Thanks. I am going back through all 803 links now and trying to edit/remove any bad descriptions and titles.
Update on stats: 5 days in to the project I am at 1230 links So far today I have 1217 hits on the site Visit length is majority - 30 seconds to 5 minutes Entry pages range from searches to direct front page entries I got hooked up with a few companies that do SEO and are adding links from their customers.
eli - appreciate your apparent enthusiasm but I have to tell you that those stats are nothing special for a FREE directory. One announcement in the solicitations area here on dp will bring the same results. What would be more telling is WHERE is your traffic/submissions coming from. I bet I could tell you that without even looking. Another stat would be the bottom line. I have been told by a veteran editor of DMOZ to actually review three hundred submissions per day would take a minimum of three hours. I don't see how someone could do it that quickly but that is DMOZ. Personally I could not do 300 reviews even if I devoted all 24 hours of the day to it without breaks. So the bottom line is - how much revenue have you generated for all that time invested? This represents the problem that most (not all) free directories run into. They get blasted with spam auto-bot submissions. That kind of traffic is really useless as auto-bots (or even webmasters) do not typically click on your adesense ads. Then what is left is 300 submissions a day - since the free site is not generating income the owner will typically lose interest so what to do with those 300 submits per day? They start to accumulate in the pending que, but who wants to spend all day reviewing 300 submits with no return? So either the pending que continues to grow or the owner gets tired of it and just approves everything even though 80%+ of the submits should be declined. Word of advice before you and your directory get buried. Change it to charge at least $1 for a review. That will instantly stop most of the spam submissions which should be declined anyway. Then you can focus on actually reviewing the submissions and building a better quality of a directory.
Thanks for the advice. Being this new, you don't think charging will ruin my chances? Even $1? I planned on that once I had a name (established) So, I need stop letting bots submit? Will the captcha stop them? That will give me time to finish back-editing all these links. lol I guess you are right though. If I want a quality directory that is worth anything, quality websites will pay the $1. It will take longer to build up, but will have actual value. Plus people will know it is only quality links. Thanks, and I hope this reply does not get me another bad rep from whomever did it
