This is the exact reason I want to live off grid.........

25,000 people in Queens, New York have not had electricity for five days. This is absolutely insane. Why does it take Con Edison five days to get the power back on? I started a thread here the other day asking questions about how to use solar power and dig my own well, and no one responded.

I tell you what, you're going to be wishing you had solar energy when the power company in your city has an outage. It just shows how primitive our society is. A grid electrical power system is completely inefficient. As soon as one power supply falls, the rest fall as well:http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060721/ap_on_re_us/nyc_blackouts

What I find to be really annoying is that when I started a thread here at DP asking about how to dig a well or use solar power, no one responded. Yet I see other threads about "peeing in your pants," and a bunch of people have responded.

What that tells me is that a lot of people aren't interested in talking about real issues. They want to talk about stupid things that don't matter in the long run. They are only concerned with an issue when it effects them directly.

The energy issue is something you people had better be concerned with. Companies like Con Edison are monopolies, and the are playing you like fools. There is no energy crisis. The city of New York could build a solar power plant to use as a primary power source, but they don't.

I live in Nevada, a desert state, and no one has talked about building a solar power plant in the desert. This whole energy crisis is a joke. The sun is out ultimate energy source, and these companies are intentionally failing to use it. Then they continue to raise prices.

By the way. If you are paying a water bill, you are getting played big time. The Earth is over 60% water, and there is water underground in most places. That means if you drill deep enough, you can tap into your own water supply and pump it into your home.

25k is just a handful compared to what we're dealing with here in the midwest. Over 600k out originally and down to 400k now.

Doesn’t NYC get their juice from Canada, Niagara Falls?

When I was living in Syracuse, NY our bills would reach $300 from Niagara Mohawk then a UK company, named National Grid, bought them out and slapped 35% hike on charges blaming the price of oil

tesla I read your post on Solar power and I didnt respond because I had no clue on were to start about solar power but it is an interesting idea you have which many people around the globe are starting to do.

So you have a well in your garden do you latehorn? How conveniant is that when you wish to have a shower, bath.. clean and treated drinking water etc?

I could walk in to town but I pay and catch a bus as it's faster and more conveniant, and I don't feel like I'm getting played by the bus company even if they do charge the most they can.

I realise companies of any sort will do what's in their power to create monopolies and maximize their profits - so what? Deal with it. Realise that's how the world works and stop with this nonsense you spew.

Energy companies making money off it's customers isn't a 'real issue'.

Build your own water well and power all your house etc with solar power if you have nothing better to do with your time.

While you're at it.. why don't you sound off about gas price extortion and find a way to convert your car to use the energy from the sun then tell everyone else they're getting played by oil companies.

While you're wasting your time doing all that I'll be drinking perfectly ok water from my tap, having hot showers whenever I like and driving a car that doesn't need constant charging and pissing around and enjoy the conveniance of paying the bills.. because I have shit to do!

I don't think it's that people don't want to help but rather more people have experience with peeing in their pants than they do with living off the grid and how to go about doing it...but you raise some good points no question.

Why stop there though. What about oil companies? You think Mexxon has any interest whatsoever in 'alternative' energy sources?? HECK no!

I'm not latehorn. If I'm not correct, latehorn lives in Europe. I'm an American.

I walk to my office each day. I got one that was close to my home, and not only does it allow me to exercise, but I save money at the same time. It is more money I have to invest in my business.

You just don't get it do you? They are ripping us all off. A man in Queens New York lost $25,000 worth of business in three days because of the outage. Do you think they are going to reimburse him?

They are called con men. They are privatizing all the natural resources. It is easy to sit here and talk about dealing with it until your own power goes out. Then what are you going to do?

America is about being independent, and you ARE NOT independent when you are dependent on a power company or water company to supply you. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I've got a $300+ power bill this month because a scam run by own power company. But you know what? it is your life, do what you want. I will be free, because I'm going to take the money I'm saving and use it to live off grid.

Just wait until they let off a nuke or bioweapon in a major city..........I hope you have an evacuation plan. This book may cost $36 bucks, but I'm thinking about buying it:http://standeyo.com/Our_Books/PPusa/MAPS/PPusa.intro.html

Keep depending on corrupt governments and corps if you want to.......just remember what happened during Hurricane Katrina.

Don't get me started on the gas companies. They are bleeding Nigeria dry and the people there are starving why they pump the oil out of the nation. Then they install a leader that is completely corrupt himself. Nikola Tesla, Viktor Shauberger, and T. Henry Moray are all right. There is a conspiracy to suppress alternative energy sources. The population is so ignorant it is absolutely pathetic.

The government loves our ignorance. Most people don't even know about Operation Paperclip, a top secret project carried out by the US Military after WW2 to capture about 700 Nazi scientists and bring them to the US. A lot of the technology they dug out of Germany is STILL classified today. I've heard rumors the Germans were working on all kinds of technology.

Both the B2 Spirit and the Tomahawk cruise missle are based off German technology captured during the second world war. When Nikola Tesla died, the FBI confiscated his papers. His was working on a death ray project.

If you or anyone is interested in becoming free from corrupt power companies, here is a website I found that shows you how to build a homemade solar power generator for about $300: http://www.rain.org/~philfear/how2solar.html

This page is probably one of the most important on the internet. When I talk about switching to solar power, I'm not talking about buying that $26,000 crap. That is a rip off, and again, they feed off our ignorance.

That link will show you how to build a low cost solar power generator. It may not be powerful enough to power your home, but I'm betting if you can spend about $3000, you should be able to generate enough electricity from the sun to power a small to medium sized home.

I would still keep an account with the local power company, but I would only use it when it is raining, cloudy, or snowing. This is what I love about the net. If you do your homework, you can learn anything. The internet is an autodidacts paradise.

Oh, and I did mention water didn't I? Here is a link that will teach you how to dig your own well for less than $500:http://fdungan.faithweb.com/well.htm

Once you've got your own well with a solar energy power system, you will truly be living the American Dream. I'm looking forward to using these guides in the next few years. Many of you here at DP have taken the step to become financially independent. Now that you've done that, take the step to become energy and water independent. Once you do this, nothing in this world can stop you.

    Tesla, I admirer your words..

Unfortunately people see water electric and cars etc as a necessary thing to pay for in life.. who would think you could get checks from the electric company..

Bottom line.. People are not ready for change.. if they were we would riot and take to the streets.. until then all of our good intentions are on deaf ears.

stay positive and do your thing.. seeing is believing and that is how it is

According to the technical specifications at http://www.rain.org/~philfear/solar_power.html, the peak power output of the solar panel is 5 and a half watts. Peak means noontime on a sunny day...at night you get nothing.

Now, 5.5 watts isn't a lot. A common nightlight takes 7 watts. Your laptop probably requires 50 to 100 watts. Heating, air conditioning and refrigeration with such low power are out of the question.

I understand your frustration, but I'm not sure that you are going to find happiness with one, or even ten, of these solar panels.

You're right, the system would have to be scaled up a bit. That page can give people a good idea of what they will need in order to build a basic solar power energy supply. However, I don't believe it is necessary to spend $26,000 in order to build one powerful enough for your home.

I'm still in the early stages right now. I will probably need to sit down and figure out how much power I use in a single month. Once I can figure out how much power I use, I can next decide how much more I will need to spend in order to build one that is strong enough to power computers and other appliances. I firmly believe about $3000 to $5000 should be enough. I don't have a wife or kids, so my power needs are not that high. I may even be able to build it for $2,500.

Here is some sample math to get you started. All the numbers shown are reasonable, but approximations.

Assume you pay $0.10 per kWh, which means kilowatt-hour, for electricity and your monthly power bill is $100. That means your monthly power consumption is 1000 kWh, or 1 million watt-hours.

A single panel costs $300 and generates 5 watts at noon. Let's assume your site has almost-cloudless skies so you get 10 hours of bright sun per day. Each day one panel makes 50 watt-hours. In a month it therefore makes 30 * 50 = 1500 watt-hours.

To get the 1 million watt-hours that now cost you $100 a month from the power company, you will need about 650 panels. Since each one costs $300, your total upfront cost will be $195,000.

Once again, all these numbers are approximate, and it's certainly possible that I have made some grevious mathematical errors. You will need to do your own calculations and see it you really want to go down this path toward energy independence.

    Good luck!

Hmmmm, you make my decision to move to California 20 years ago look even better. I can't remember the last time the power went out. There's little or no humidity. Snow is a short drive away, the beach is even closer. Houses that will sell for $4,000,000 in 2026 are going for $650,000. Earthquakes are really no big deal and wild fires and mud slides only affect the very rich and a few poor. Best place to live besides maybe Australia.

My grandpa retired from Con Ed after 38 years with them which started 2 days after he got off the boat from Ireland. So if you don't like ConEd don't bad mouth my grandpa's old company, move away.

That's probably because very few (if any) of DP's members know anything or have experience with digging wells and using solar power. :D
