I think there are no other alternative then Search Engine Optimisation and Link popularity to make your proxy popular. Those proxies who are in top position for keywords like myspace proxy, unlock myspace, unblock myspace will ever get huge hits, even if its a support or winter :)

I think it depens a lot on your host. When i still used to host with shared hosting, my proxies got blocked after a couple of weeks, max a month. On one of my reseller accounts, the proxies got blocked in a day. If you have a VPS or Dedi-box, then it will take a couple weeks, after which your ip will probably get blocked, so it's best to host each site on it's own IP, to prolong them. Then, after it's blocked, just change the IP to another one, and it's open again. Most blocking companies don't bother blocking the domain, but they do block the IP.

There is always frustration if people expect a lot traffic in short times. To get stable traffic proxy sites need to exist at least 1 year, then is always needs to working continuous on promotions (I would suggest people to start study article about SEO and how to get good SERP - which one are most searched proxy keywords phrase, then on site optimization, then off site optimization ), then make a site with good and interesting articles about proxies and not only simple php or cgi proxy server sites that are attractive only to school people and you can expect progress after 1 year for sure. Of course every proxy owner must have personally interest into proxy world. Otherwise it will never work.
Off site SEO campaign is most import factor and key for success in gaining good SERP and stable traffic from SE.

yep...most people regard proxies as use and throw...but long term plans can succeed too.

    Here's a big tip:
Most schools have webfilters against things that have like 'games' or 'proxies' in the URL. Choose a URL that doesn't have anything that might be blocked.

For example, msnvip.com spread like crazy around my school because it wasn't blocked.

Yeah, I realized that as well so my domain names are poopsicle.info and proggsey.info

Hmm, maybe since I made so many mistakes, I can write on how not to make those same mistakes and put it up on my proxies.

Proggsey is 18 days old and Poopsicle is currently 2 days old, I want more visitors to proggsey (currently 100-200 UVs a day). I'm going to start working on articles for poopsicle as well.

I started with proxies 9 months ago and optimized several of them for one particular keyword, just because I didnt know what to optimize them for and by now I have 5 of the 10 first places at Google :) Its not a heavily searched for keyword though :(
But SEO, yes, just as with other sites.
Another thing I have noticed on my 6-8 months old proxies is that they can be dead for a while, then they suddenly have days of $1-$3 so I never sell them, just let them sit there.

Thanks for the info Login. I have proxies too, and they bounce up and down and all over the place, but I agree. Let them sit. What will it hurt or cost you? SEO is HUGE. I have never spent a dime on my proxies. I have several that make $5-$8 daily. Some decline over the past couple of weeks. But think of all the 15-28 yr old workers there are that use proxies. Target workers. Target canada and UK. Both pay well with most adverstisers. Bottom line if you want traffic you can spend time or money doing manually posts of this and that, which work for the time being. But if you want organic traffic then you need to be in the top 2-3 pages of google for your terms. Liam Fox www.venturefox.com says to target top terms even if it is more targeted you are still better.

Also on my proxies. 96.7% of traffic on my new proxies comes from people typing it into the browser and book marks. So make it easy to remember domain and one that is not as others have said with "proxy" and the like in the domain. Also think like a teenager. Pick terms that Identify with them.

Just my two cents. Others have said it better here on DP already. Reading here is great too, oh and one other very important thing that no one else has directly mentioned:

    PATIENCE.

:) Hard to do, but all good things take time.

Hosting costs? Domain Reg Costs? All that is more than a dime, im sure :)

In my opinion, you just have to get ranked high in search engines, just like everyone has said before me. Don't go for the search terms like "myspace proxy" or "unblock myspace" Everyone is doing that, and therefore it's really hard to get to the first, heck even the second page. There are so many better keywords out there that people search and are easy to get ranked for.

I always wanted to say the next line:

    Just my two cents. :D

search for high traffic keywords, and personally email the owners of related article/blog sites (not other proxies).

Buy yearly links from them, generally cheap.

Rank high for a keyword, and sit on it while word spreads itself.

I just acquired My Link Train Top Proxy Sites, which should be helpful in promoting your proxy.

In the next couple of days, I hope to learn how to admin it. :D

Topsites are shit when it comes to proxies. Don't use them. There is no need to. They don't drive any traffic for you. Trust me.

Submit your site to social bookmarking sites. I have found that to be the best. Put your proxy on digg, get about 50 or so diggs, and you will get aroudn 200-400 uniques. I've tried it, it works everytime.

Startinga proxy now isn't bad. You can still make money from people who just want to stay 'annonymous' (i.e. people who use proxies for porn)

    Hope That helps
    Good Luck

My first attempt at making money on the internet was a proxy i made a couple months ago. All i did for advertising was a link on proxytor.com and proxy.org. Within days i was getting around 100-200 uniques a day. Then all of a sudden traffic jumped up to 600-800 uniques a day. After some research i found that my proxy was passed around by a ton of blogs as a list of working proxies. Although my success was pure luck, maybe you could create some kind of similar list with your proxies in it and get it viral.

Now for my extra 2 cents. My honest opinion would be to not worry about about proxies and invest your time in more meaningful, legitimate, and more profitable websites. Yes proxies will give you the quick and easy money, but there is a much greater chance for invalid clicks, bans, ect. from what ive read around the net.

Anyway good luck with your sites.

OK, so I have spent a large ammount of money on my proxies, including my $1000 on hosting in two months. (gotta watch that overage, my fault). But what I meant was that I had not spent a dime advertising my proxies. Since the thread was about proxy traffic I didn't think to specify.

HEHE there is a lot of cents flying around in this thread, forget proxies, I am just going to post on DP and take two cents from everyone. LOL. :~)

It was said at the top of the second page, SEO. Thats it, yes at the end of this month even having spent $1000 on hosting I will make a profit. I have SEOd for Unblock Myspace and I get so much traffic that it overloads my server, and I have a dedicated server.

Contradictory to an above post I Would definitely recommend to SEO for the big words. Ideally I would say build lots of proxies and SEO for the big terms and the not so common as mentioned above. But In the matter of a month or two you can get to the second or third page of Google with the big terms. I have one site on the top of page 4 for unblock myspace and the top of page 2 for myspace unblock. It was on page 2 for a few weeks for unblock myspace, but I have been messing with it and got it demoted, plus it takes constant link building to maintain your position. None the less I get about 7000-9000+ page views of the home page alone each day. It brings about $6-$12 per day from Adsense.

So you said that you wanted to make $10 per day I think in your first post. SEO is the answer. Go get everyones two cents on SEO and then do it. Again I have not spent a dime on advertising. In fact I have sold some of my advertising to others. (also a nice side boost).

That, as it is popular in this thread, is my two cents continued. :)

$6-$12 per day from 7k pageviews? WOW. You must have some really awful traffic or something. I got around 600-800pageviews of the home page each day, and i get about that much (except on weekends. Weekends they hardly ever click)

Its mostly traffic from China, Iran and Russia. But it pays. I do no promotion to get this traffic, it all comes from Google. Needless to say if I pay $100 per month for hosting just for this site and it makes $250 then I am $150 to the head with no real work other then SEO. Multiply by 10 and its a nice $1500 per month or $18K per year. Poor traffic or not, let it run and concentrate on bringing in good US/UK/AU traffic to other proxies and you can still make decent money.
