A niche is something that you want to specialise in for example a niche could be rock climbing.motoring. Health. sports. or virtualy anything that you want to specialise in. each niche can be broken down into sub categories lets use health as a simple one. The health niche could be broken down into

exercise
yoga

In other words a niche is what you make it but something with little competition which also has some demand is best so do some research first before you decide what to concentrate your efforts on

Grunt, I feel your frustration, but the good news is there is ways to do your research to find what the "customer" is looking for in your market In otherwords you want to find the exact search phrase they are using and then use this in your URL, and in your post as keywords. I'm in a very small competitive niche and I've use this strategy since I started and I'm very happy with the results. I know you don't want to share your niche with the world but drop me an email and I will see if I could help you with finding some good keywords.
