I have a site that's getting over 1k hits a month for 6 months and it's showing an alexa ranking of 1,200,000 ranking. Now I just put up a new search directory for a few days and look at it's stats: Yesterday 20,104 7 day avg 135,670 1 month avg 480,747 3 month avg 1,088,630 3 month change -2,413,453 Oh for the 3 days, there's a total of 1,000 visitors. Ofcourse most of these visitors probably have the alexa toolbar installed on their browser. So now it has a higher Alexa ranking than the other site who's getting 1k hits a day average.. hahaha So I can end up with an alexa ranking of 20,000 if this keeps up for 3 months..hahaha
Thats the problem with Alexa if your users are not the type of people to have the toolbar installed your site will show a really low score.
The best thing to do is to install the Alexa widget on your site. It will keep the best record of views that way. I personally don't care about my Alexa rank since it is too easy to game the system. That's just my 2 cents.
Just post your links on webmaster forum, then your alexa ranking will rise. Only nerds and webmasters have Alexa toolbar, regular normal visitors don't have them, so it's not very accurate at all for small sites.
Yes, most people say that Alexa ranking is not reliable. But still, most online advertising companies use it...
Alexa is overrated SPYWARE and that is all it is. The traffic numbers on the spywares home page is not accurate- by any means or measure. I will never understand why people continue to promote spyware, and that is all alexa is.
Ignore Alexa , It's pure trash, the only people who care about alexa rankings are first time advertisers who get sucked into the whole hoopla thinking good numbers means good conversion rates. Alexa is like dating a tramp/slut. One day things are consistent with the traffic you have coming to your site , then the next day your numbers are worse even though the traffic is the exact same.
Alexa traffic info is not as accurate as you expected. Take it as a rough reference. Your focus should be on Google.
I once made a suggestion to Alexa by a comment on their blog to have a script that webmasters can install on their pages to make the Alexa ranking more realistic. I though a script such as the one offered by Google analytics would be a good idea. But I was ignored. Anyways, I think, the only people that benefit from the information supplied by the Alexa toolbar is Alexa themselves. Otherwise, the only information that a webmaster can read from the ranking they provide is that: A website with lower Alexa ranking receives more visitors with Alexa toolbar installed. Not to mention that even this is not accurate given that the information is easily manipulated. It is not even close to a “rough reference†in my opinion.
Did you check the graph? Alexa ranking is reliable only in US. But if already have traffic graphs then i am 85% agree that you have good traffics
We have to live in reality...although the tool can be bogus at times for the really big sites it's still a great indicator of overall traffic. Ideally we would want to forget about it and write it off as stupid (I have had other sites in the past get 3k uniques as well and crap Alexa ranking) but it is still relevant for webmasters and advertisers. I know not to trust it 100% yet I still look to it as well as PR when evaluating a website. What would be the alternative? Relying on someone telling you how much traffic they get? Sometimes you need a big 3rd party involved...nothing is perfect but work with what you know about the system.
