Hi, I am thinking of purchasing a VPS solution for multiple domains, and have some questions. 1. Many solutions offer multiple IP options. Why would you need this? 2. If you have shell access, can you install any software you want? Like Java 3. Do all VPS solutions offer cron jobs? Or is this a feature I have to look for specifically in the specs. 3. Do VPS systems restrict the CPU load for your virtual server, or do they charge if there is spike in load? The reason I am asking is because I want to run a cron job that updates some of my website pages every hour or so. Thx
1. I have a VPS with multiple IPs and I find them useful for the custom nameserver that I have set up. I'm sure there are other benefits of having them but that's what I use mine for. 2., 3., and the other 3. These are the sorts of questions that you'd probably have to ask the companies themselves, as their policies often differ.
Nobody needs multiple IPs, but they do have their advantages. Depending on the provider and host OS, yes. If cron job availability isn't directly mentioned anywhere in the site, search the provider's discussion forums, or just ask them. Yes, most VPS providers restrict CPU usage or simply balance the overall load. My provider will allow me to use close to all CPU cycles if they're available (not in use by other customers), but if someone else's OS demands CPU, the virtual server management software will reassign CPU where necessary. Not sure how many customers are on the same physical server as I, but I've yet to experience any performance issues. Good luck!
These all seem like basic items you should get, even from lower priced packages. If you can't get them, maybe you should keep looking. As for cron jobs specifically... While that should also be available to you, if not, you can look in to "fake cron".
