thinking of getting into affiliate marketing

    Hi all,

I have a football website that's been around for quite a few years and gets about 4,000 visits per day. For the past few years I've been using AdSense, making roughly $100/month, which doesn't even cover the web hosting costs. So, I've done some reading about affiliate marketing and decided to try it.

Could anyone suggest a good affiliate program for a website like mine?

    Thanks in advance

Wait, football or soccer? Heh, don't mind me asking - I don't know where you are from!

Think about signing up for programs that provide online betting. Just an idea.

That's pretty good traffic, I'd suggest signing up with CommissionJunction and having a look through their inventory of programs. Personally I'd steer clear from betting programs, since in the US that is a big gray area. I'd look at selling team logo'd merchandise, which I know there are programs on CJ for this.

Lastly, only $100 per month in Adsense with 4k uniques per month is just terrible. I'd focus on better placement, because chances are with bad placement you aren't going to do any better with affiliating either. Like for starters instead of just having a header Adsense ad I'd get an adsense block added to the second post of every thread. This is a common practice and there are mods available to do this.

Yeah, I know that $100/month with that kinda traffic is not good. I used to get much more from prepaid ticket ads, but all of those clients have disappeared lately. Hence I am now looking for other ways of generating revenue.

coasttocoasttickets, tickco and a bunch of others... they just stopped advertising with me. Apparently, my competitors had their prices very low compared to mine because they now have all these ticket brokers and I know that they are getting less traffic :)

$100 doesn't cover your months hosting costs? What kind of hosting plan do you have...? :S

    Hi petermk,

Just had a look, cool site.

Some good responses there especially from cldnails, the trouble is affiliate marketing can be a real minefield. So many of these programs offer the earth then fail to deliver the goods, so frustrating. The learning curve is really steep and it is so easy to make costly mistakes in the beginning, The information is out there but gathering it all together and then making good use of it is massively time consuming.

I started on this road a few years ago. I did all the above, searching for ideas and resources trying to create profitable strategies. I got very frustrated by all the broken promises. I wasted time and money but eventually I started to see small results I covered my previous losses and started to turn a little profit. Nothing earth shattering, I was still working fulltime but the extra was nice.

At the beginning of this year I stumbled across a program which at first sight looks like the usual bul***it. You know the type of thing, BIG RED WRITING, bullet points, $171,168.06 Per Month earnings claims (they certainly know which buttons to press lol). Despite all this I read through the blurb.

I’m so glad I did. This program is genuine. I thought I had learnt some things in the previous 18 months. I knew nothing. I have learnt so much it makes my head spin, my little profit ain’t so little anymore.

This is not about getting rich quick, that is a myth for fools, it is about benefiting from hard work, it is about taking out the long slow learning process, it is about step by step guidance. I now market many, many different products successfully.

This isn’t exactly what you asked for but get through the sales pitch and have a look at the videos. See what I’m talking about at www.FingerTipWealth.com (as you asked I hope this will not infringe any rules.) This is, I believe the most comprehensive ‘how to’ program for affiliate marketing available.

Yes, I am marketing this program. If you buy in I make money but believe me so can you.

Take a look, you have nothing to lose.

    Good luck

Ebay's affiliate program would probably work pretty well for you. Sports fans love to buy everything from memorabilia, jerseys, caps, tickets and just about any other licensed items.

look at your traffic logs. What terms to people use to find you?

What things can you sell that match those terms?

I have a dedicated server... $185/month. I have hundreds of people constantly refreshing the message board on game days and anything less than a decent dedicated server will just crash.

You're wrong about them liking "licensed items". They like cheap items and prefer Chinese knock off jerseys over officially licensed NFL merchandise :) I am in an affiliate program for a website that sells jerseys, caps, etc... hundreds of clicks and zero sales.

Okay, I see your point about "licensed" but on Ebay you normally pay less for even the licensed stuff than you would at say Steiner or the NFL Shop for example. I haven't had a lot of luck with direct sellers of sports stuff either but on the bay it has been much better.

Great suggestion, perhaps you should look into joining the eBay affiliate program through the auction site or on Pepperjam. They offer some great widgets you could throw up on different parts of your site to attract some clicks.

Also, have you considered doing some sort of incentive sign up? I always suspected this would pay off in a forum with a good number of members.

I had no idea what to expect from adsense payouts but that seems like a lot of work for little return - im quite gutted bout that
