Thinking of building a Joomla site

I am thinking of building a Joomla site. Here's my plan to start out...

First I'm going to create articles on my topic and display them on the website (I'm hoping this will help with the initial adding of content)
Then I'll create a forum (I know that this probably won't work out very well on it's own starting out if I just build a forum)
Add an amazon store and some advertisements
Get it hosted with a domain name
Then possibly a blog as well

Do you think Joomla would be a good tool for starting out on this and are there any resources that you think is a must to help with Joomla and SEO? I'm not planning to have this done and up and running straight away as it would be something I do in my spare time however I'd like to try to build a site as search engine friendly as possible and don't have time enough to learn complex coding.

With Joomla, you don't need to learn any kinds of coding. There are thousands of extensions that can help you do anything you want using Joomla. Whatever you have described above is possible in Joomla. First start building the website and try to search for the extensions in the official extension directory of Joomla.

    Thats great EcoGecko!

Joomla 1.7 has some big improvements in ACL, nested categories and built-in SEO features. Using this version is a good experience and ease.

    Thanks.

    and here is another view.

joomla 1.5 rocks and all of the extensions which there are many are stable and work well. Sure you can go with version 1.7 but you may find more bugs than you would like to fix.
