If you want to do it, and aren't being pressured to do it because it's expected of you... then so be it. Personally, at 19 you ought to be out enjoying life ;)

I think you are a puppet. And what you're about to do is disgracful. Giving false hope to those in desperate times. "Culturalling" them or making them "Civilised" you'll say ... I say religious imperialsim.

    P.S. Are you Mormon?

Yes I am Mormon, and I am curious as to how I am making them "civilized"... I'm not changing their culture in any way. Unless of course you consider going to church every sunday being "civilized", in which case, most of the world isn't. But that doesnt make any sense. We have almost 60,000 missionaries in almost every country in the world doing the same thing I am... "giving false hope" as you say. We are not forcing anyone to do anything. Thats like suing McDonalds for "making" you eat there. You went in and enjoyed their burgers by your own free will, so please don't tell me what I am doing is disgraceful

My friend's dad was a missionary. He converted a whole trible of peoples. They were happy before within their own unit. Until some Christian nut came along and "civilised" them. It's in effect what you'll do: show them "the light". Oh and for the record, McDonalds is much, much less innocent than you simplistically put there.

Haha actually Brazil is one of the fastest growing areas in the world. Most missionaries get 100+ baptisms a month. I speak fluent spanish so I hope that will help me since they are similar. I will spend 2 months in a training center in Brazil learning the language

    BRUm:

You still havent explained to me how these people got "civilized"... they dont have to change their culture at all after joining the church other than of course they have to follow the rules such as no smoking or drinking. They join the church by their own free will and choice just like anything else anyone does in this world. If they believe in the church and find it brings them happiness, what is wrong with that? You said they were happy before, but never gave any proof of how this impacted their life negatively after. Please form a valid arguement before flaming. Thanks

    "Civilised" was a euphemism.

    That's exactly what I'm talking about ...

I wasn't flaming, I was expressing my opinion; and I'm pretty sure I can do that.

Missionaries are a way of spreading religion. Mormonism, as it happens, takes 10% of each person's annual income. These new Brasillian zombies must be a nice bonus for the church eh? ;)

We don't "Take" 10%, they GIVE 10% on their own. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is doing VERY well financially and does not need more money from some poor Brazilians. In case you didnt know, there is no paid ministry in this church. Nobody gets paid a dime for anything they do. I am paying $10,000 out of my own pocket to go do this (No I am not paying the church... it is going toward rent, food, etc. for 2 years). I have saved my whole life to be able to pay for it. The church doesn't do this for the money. Every penny that comes from the 10% tithing goes toward building meeting houses, temples, charity (i.e. hurricane victims), and helping support needy members. I could share some tithing related scriptures with you if you really wanted but im sure most people on here don't want me preaching to them.

It so happens I have "The Book Of Mormon - Another Testament of Jesus Christ" here.

I just think it's sad when people preach to those who are in so much need. They'll cling to anything that may give them hope ... doesn't seem right when your religion is full of so many contradictions and errors. But heh, so are all religions.
