    Think again!

Got virus from sites listed by Flippa.com

I've been a victim of a malicious site listed on Flippa and it appears as though I am not the only one.

    Be careful!

PS. I think this is the most relevant forum to post this thread. Mods feel free to move it if you disagree.

Thanks for the heads up. Any details on what you caught and how? I am wondering if simply keeping anti-virus, windows patches (win7) and running with least permission is enough? Should I just switch to Linux? Does it get Macs? Good luck.

A detailed explanation of how it affected my computer is in the linked thread. I had AVG Anti-Virus installed at the time of visiting the malicious site and it didn't help me it still got infected. In a nutshell, it appears as though all the files are removed on your computer with an empty desktop, your computer keeps restarting, and you get a window popup telling you that you have bad hard disk sectors.

I think it's a bit of a cheap shot to imply this activity is only restricted to Flippa. It would be safe to say that Digitalpoint or any other Websites for sale forum will be vulnerable to this. In fact the barriers to doing it are very much lower on Digitalpoint because it's free to list your websites for sale. This is all redundant anyway if you have a decent firewall and antivirus installed.

All I can do is talk from personal experience. I use both sites quite a bit and it seems apparent that Flippa has been targeted. If being honest is considered a bit of a cheap shot, then so be it, but I sure as hell am going to let people know about it, because it was horrible what I experienced, and they definitely need to do something about it if they expect users to still use that marketplace.

Also, quite honestly, I wouldn't make a big deal of this if it was a one off. I would suck it up as bad luck. But as soon as numerous people are impacted by the SAME malicious activity and it seems the marketplace is being targeted, then I think its my responsibility to let people know about it.

And while it could very easily happen on DP, its not, and you sure as hell would know about it if it was, so I don't get your point.

It's not redundant at all. I am not the most tech savvy person in the world, but I've been online enough to know to have a decent firewall and antivirus installed.

I know how it feels when you have to format all your drives and re install OS. :(
Most antivirus softwares are crap and don't do any good.

P.S. I think it is a case of sellers site being hacked after they listed it on flippa.
