lol, I finally got through to the copyright office (there lines are busy 99% of the day) and the woman that picked up was as dumbfounded as me. The number on my cell phone call log and voice mail info was (202) 707-3002, which is for "pre-registration". You can find that number here: http://www.copyright.gov/help/.

She said that, as other posters have pointed out, the U.S. copyright office are just record holders and not 'enforcers'. So the call must have been a prank or from a competitor. The question is - how did they get the number to show up in my call log as a U.S. Copyright office number?

If it was a competitor, the act sure worked. I was ranked in the CB marketplace on 2 popular keywords within 1-5 place with decent gravity. Because of the off time, (zero sales within the last 5 days and removal of my sales page), I may never achieve that again. I can't even find my product listed.

But I guess this is a learning experience ...

Yeah, I did. I guess that must have been it. It's kind of crazy how someone can impersonate a number so easily.

Learning for everyone out here. Relieved to see that it was a prank. And that was a notorious one to play on someone.

Ok i just read the whole thread!
Beleive me im happy for you that everything turned out to be normal.
And honestly, i didn't imagine that in USA they take the copyright issues this serious
In middle east you can find copies everywhere, even it's againest the law but still no one is checking.
I for one never bought an original Dvd movie, or even a video game or a software(except for scripts for my sites)
Im sure if i moved to the US, they will hang me:s
Sorry got carried away, again im happy that everything is cool now.

You cant say "middle east" if you don't know about other middle eastern countries. I guess thats what happens in Kuwait, but kuwait is like a completely open country now so....

I'm Arab, i was raised in Jordan and Kuwait,i went to Saudia Arabia and Syria, and i have many MANY friend in other Arab countries, copies here are easy to find just like cockies :p

just to point out one thing:
i'm not proud that all my software/movies/games are copies, it's just how we get everything, i mean the number of shops selling original stuff is way too below the number of copies over here...

the only country which is even close to ban copies is Jordan, even thou, you can still find copies everywhere, but before they used to display DVDs and CDs in front of the shop, now they hide it under the table, so you enter ask about copies, and if seller suspect you're a civil cup he will tell you we don't sell copies, otherwise he will bring a box full of copies from under the table :D

in Kuwait copies still everywhere, except in airport (i've heard) that recently they insist on checking each CD/DVD you may have in your stuff...but i'm not sure about this yet.

no man, they're not strict at all here, i'm living here and you're not here, so how can you be sure that they're so strict :)

here's some photos showing that selling copies is everywhere:

this is in the downtown, and under the sun (close to the bus station) it's public and they're selling copies...

it's againest the law, but not likt the US, i never been there but i'm sure in NY downtown for example, you won't find such a photo !

you should come and see it to beleive it's normal to buy copies over here....

it's hard for you to imagine this, but beleive me, it's even harder for me to imagine living in a country which is so strict about piracy

...no they're much more sophisticated in New York; air conditioned stores, a few legit version of whatever for show and full inventory stores and warehouses full of ripoffs.

...until someone complains not much is done.

    1. The copyright office does not call people.

    2. Anyone can place a call with any caller ID. Caller ID means exactly zilch.
