They may not call it a " Google Dance" any longer. But...

I manage a site that was well ranked for multiple keywords/phrases. (Site is < 6mos old). Last week it dropped (100 places) in the serps for several of our main targeted phrases but only 4 or 10 places for others. Since it is a blog we decided to test and see if some sort of ceiling (limit) was in place to prevent new content from indexing well during this condition. We did this post with keywords in a very non-competitive area. From past experience this new post should have indexed quickly and in the top 5 with no problem. However, it did not and remained positioned at the halfway mark (25 out of 50 pages on a specific search). Social bookmarking the site did not improve the situation and in fact the social bookmarks appeared higher in the serps than our original post. Conclusion is, when this dance/slap/penalty occurs any long tail strategy is also going to be effected moving forward... not good.

Since we have been doing nothing wrong (black) with this site we were at a loss to understand why this was happening. Re-reading the Google guidelines they mention programs that query their site like (Webposition Gold) are not allowed.

Behold! I should re-read the f...ing guidelines more often. We have been running Webposition4 which is advertised as "search engine friendly". I immediately sent a letter to Google for reconsideration and apologized for this oversight and begged forgiveness and promised not use the program ever again.

One day later (1 DAY) after submitting the letter, the site was back to it's original position in the serps! I was shocked to say the least and very grateful (since this is my friends business site not some bullshit MFA thing). Being skeptical that may request would answered so fast i have been holding my breath everyday since.

Four days have passed since the reinstatement and now the penalty seems to have been put back in place. Again were down 100 places for many phrases and just a few for others. (none of these keywords/phrases are in highly competitive areas the toughest being 160K pages).

Anybody experiencing similar nonsense like this from our friends at Google and what should we call it now? Dance? Jig?

Plus, what's your take on the latest with anchor text vs. no anchor text pointing to and within?
