Running a profit .org site is fine, there aren't any official regulations that cover it. Originally .coms were meant as company portals, .nets were meant for internet related stuff, and .orgs were meant for organizations, non-profits, etc.

But now its really just a hierarchy of which domain is available, imo.

That's good to know; at least I can use the domain name I want now.

    Thanks for your help.

wikipedia might lose most of its audience and editors, if it enables adsense, cause it as started as non profit project..

but yeah they could make billions on it

I'm sure the founders are very clear about the goals and it isn't about the money. I'm just grateful that they took on the project and make the information so freely accessible. Kudos to the founders of the internet and wikipedia :D

There was a recent article in the WSJ about an interview with the CEO of Craigslist, it was interesting. Basically the WSJ editor thought it odd Craigslist did not do more to capitalize on all their traffic.

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB115049840863382886.html

It ends -- "Having taken advantage of their hospitality for the better part of an afternoon, I stand to take my leave, but my hosts insist on driving me back to my hotel. Once there, we say our good-byes and, belatedly, a thought occurs to me -- an afterthought, perhaps. If Craigslist does what its users ask of it, and Craigslist doesn't need or seem to want all the ad revenue it declines to collect, maybe we, as end-users, should ask them to post some banner ads and give us the money instead.

There's something wrong, I suppose, in that reasoning. But I like the idea."

I guess they don't really want to bother. Say if they put Adsense ads on their site then it will bring up alot of compeating sites. If they are making alot from selling their products then they won't want their visitors going to similar sites as theirs.

Its always about the BUCK! Thats why they haven't implemented it. They are a information service and I think adsense would turn some people off....and the downhill slide would start.

I don't think there is any rule that says a .org domain cannot use Adsense. It's come to the point where almost all sensible .com domains have already been taken. So have to opt for other less popular TDLs such as .org or .info.

Wikipedia is a project looking to be bought and there is
awhole lot of development going on there..so don't think
they are just doing a service..just ask yourself
if you were the owner, how much would you ask for it?

What the hell is puzzles.com, is that your site? I'm sure it gets "massive traffic", according to you. rofl. Anyways, I love Wikipedia the way it is now, ads-free, only information, unlike those sites that are swarmed with ads which distract you constantly, I guess that's why I love Wikipedia so much.

And that Puzzles place does have ads. Go advertise that site elsewhere.

Hey, why don't we worry less about other sites and concentrate on our own.

Afaik the wikipedia owners made some huge money (i think in porn but not sure) and made wikipedia to give back to the internet users. they don't need any money.

I am sure Wiki would love to monetise the site but they have certain obligations.Surely, if they do make money, all of it will have to go to charity or share with contributers (which can be difficult).

They are making plenty each year in donations
    http://fundraising.wikimedia.org/

I think this fundraising started less than a year ago and they already
accululated $1.4 million, its not bad could certainly pay the developers, servers
and a bunch of other people involved, if you ask me.

Maybe they don't want to ruin the "integrity" of Wiki.

i second that. the whole idea of wikipedia is to help people get information and not to make money.

didnt you hear about "Non-profit organisation"? Search google and you will land up on wikipedia..maybe then u know what wikipedia actually is:)
