In a debate like this it often boils down to semantics & the way various people use the same terms to define slightly (or even radically) different concepts in different context. In this case the term 'Copywriting', while it has a technical definition, also has a common-use definition (which can depend on the environment/context the term is used in)

    Wikipedia defines "Copywriting" as...
While the technical definition indicates that 'copywriting' refers to content written with the purpose of promoting, persuading or 'selling' an idea or product, "Copy" itself has a much broader definition...

Although there is certainly variety here, Digital Point is seems to be populated predominantly by webmasters who generate revenue through their websites in various ways; contextual advertising, affiliate marketing, ecommerce, subscriptions and combinations of these and more.

    "Copywriting" for AdSense..?
Unfortuantely many times a 'revenue' website simply has content as a vehicle for the advertisements (not unlike most television programming & magazine content). Far too often revenue sites are produced with minimal investment. The content is often provided via RSS feeds, re-published articles, scraper output, random content generators (which 'scramble and repurpose exisiting content) and any other cheap and effortless content source.

This content is often overly seasoned with certain keyphrases to invoke the highest paying contextual ads and create higher keyword density in an effort to get the page to rank well. The idea being that if you generate enough visits and place the ads in the most commonly viewed areas - you WILL generate click-thoughs - even if the content is ...of questionable value.

    Is it REALLY Copywriting..?
Writing content whose sole purpose is to be keyword-rich enough to force the display of desired ads, or to force a page to rank well is still referred to as 'content writing' or 'copywriting' , but is it truelly 'copywriting'..?

    You'd be surprised...

And I say that speaking as someone who started his career as a professional technical writer.

I don't think I'd be surprised. Notice I said "not all."

Copywriters are people who write copy. Copy is not just sales copy. Copy is the stuff that comes out of your weatherman's mouth. Copy is what's in a white paper. Copy is also what's in many manuals. Sure... more technical manuals are written by tech writers... sure.

    Hi MontelloMarketing,
Your observations about the copywriting section here is right and I agree that it's more inclined towards content creation than direct response. But you might find people seeking direct response help in the marketing and branding section of this forum.

Your copywriting skills and time, which are extremely valuable, can be better used there instead of discussing the word itself ;)

DP is a very warm community with lots of members, most experts in their own area of work...Welcome to the forums! :)

BTW, I like your writing style very much, specially the word "story"!
    Bye
