It depends what you understand by "competitive"!

For most "very competitive" keywords you wouldn't be on the first page of results without a minimum PR6-7.

If you have a site with a few pages then high PR links can help but if you have 100k plus pages in a low PR site you can throw enough internal links/anchor text at a keyword to get good rankings. I do it every day and rank above PR7s and PR8s. It's not all about PR (and it may be less so if these changes are permanent :) .

I never said it was all about PR. In fact it was probably less and less. However, it had gradually become a factor that webmasters could use to "manipulate" in a bigger or smaller way their results so much so that the "selling of PR" is now so widespread.

    Not angry! ;)

I'm just trying to explain why I think it would be in Google's interest not to display the toolbar PR.

Think about this though.... Hundreds of thousand of people have chose to download the toolbar to see pagerank levels....

If Google removes the pagerank from the toolbar, there is a very good possibility they will lose those users.

    Oh!!!!

I agree, these guys that use it 500 times a day and live off google for free and then complain if a stat if off for ten minutes drive me nuts!

I bet it does G too, so we are one step closer to pay to play. I feel we should all be kicking back a percentage to "real" advertising to pay respect.

But I'm an old school, scratch my back, kinda guy.

May be in their best interest but they would sure have some splainin' to do as all along they have been touting their "patented PR technology" and stating that it is their "exclusive measure of how important a site is" and now all of a sudden it isn't important to measure that anymore :D

But the fact that they don't "show" the PR value doesn't mean they couldn't use it internally, as part of their algorithm. Probably the toolbar PR value was very inaccurate anyway.

TrustRank seems like a huge improvement... I guess Co-op will weaken more then ever.

I believe the PR will be replaced with some other measure, probably by trust rank, Page Rank will be replaced because its too important to the marketing of Google. So, something will replace it.

For the first joey, I don't agree with you.... Pagerank is a patent by Google and an enourmous effort has gone into it....

I expect that this new trustrank will be a contributing factor the the future of the pagerank method but will not replace it entirely...

Maybe they will stop displaying it on the toolbar in the near future, which I doubt because thousands of people will uninstall it leaving them with less personal data to retreive, but it will still be visible in their directory as it is now to rank the order of the listings....

Pagerank isn't going anywhere any time soon.... Google doesn't give up that easy. They will continue to prove they are unminipulatable...

I agree. If the page rank is not displayed in the toolbar it doesn't mean it's gone. In fact it will probably become again more important in the algorithm as webmasters won't have access to it anymore.

Seems to me TrustRank is a way of discounting link brokering based on PR... A 3 month old domain with a PR of 4 is NOT the same as a 4 year old domain with a PR of 4.

You gotta give props to the OG's, dawg.

Google has been proven manipulatable, even getting their own PR9 and position for adsense taken by another site.

Don't any of you think that it is a little early to declare the death of PR anywhere? What's it been, 4 or 5 hours now since this has been seen?

Maybe some hardware crashed. Maybe they are fixing the 302. Maybe they are taking it out of view. Maybe they realized that Stanford does own the rights.

    I saw that hijack aswell....

I mentioned somewhere in another thread: Everyone watching them update the pagerank level on all these future pagerank tools is a joke....

    They are tightning up...

Also, they are targeting brokerage..... Why should people get rich selling something they created? ..... really, think about it....

Here is I think a valuable opportunity:

If we are not given a representation of PR levels in future, via toolbar or directory...

What will you look for when chasing links?

I think I'd look firstly to how they perform in the search results for the target phrase, then how they perform for an allinanchor search of the target phrase.

What new widget will the seo tool makers invent to give us the info we want? What info is really critical in deciding the importance or value of a link?

I think we would actually end up with a better internet if PR was not disclosed *ouch* sorry. I've a few PR6's now and I'm still saying it.

Do you really want PR back? How will it effect seo practices / the web we weave if it isn't displayed?

Since I first saw what is now known as the 302 redirect bug, I judge less by position in serps and more on relative subject, PLUS allinanchor, allintitle, allintext, and allinurl. With at least the first 3 showing well, serps should be good. With out the good serp in Google, there is a problem. But that same site will show great in MSN or Yahoo, and knowing they were suppressed, it would eventually look good in Google, and therefore a good site.

My mistake was thinking it would take over a year and a half to get Google to listen and begin a fix. If those links I gained based on the above are still there, I should see improvement when they do finally fix things. They removed one of the major 302 methods in Feb, and I saw massive improvement in my site.

We have a tool for this: http://www.mcdar.net/dance/

This might explain the "Meet the google engineers" cocktail party in NYC.

Being something of a newbie I have always been amused by the attention paid to PR when the hits come from SERPs which, in turn, are driven by weird factors like the name of the sub-directory you store your images in.

If PR is dead - and it sure looks dead for my sites - this simply reflects the fact Google has not paid much attention to toolbar PR for months if not years. Is this an issue?

Likely not unless the new order is radically different from the old. And that is measured by SERPS rather than non-existant PR.

Or, hey, its the Memorial Day weekend. Fred, the last hire, has been left in charge of the shop and, unlike all the other Googleteers, was not in on the IPO. A couple of lines of code and instant panic. Fred will not be working at Google that much longer...but it would have been a fun ride....

well, for starters, I think alot of link brokers who have been sitting pretty for some time, will need to get their act together and start working again....

But as far as a new tool, I guess something that would take sites from the highest positions in the Google directory and display a rank based on that....
