Theory of highest paying ads first.

    hi All

Yesterday I saw something on my account which I want to share with you all.

In my index page the CPC is usually 0.10$ and sometimes 0.15$ never more than that. That I thought is due to my niche...thats ok with me.

now yesterday all of a sudden I have one click on the same index page saying 1$. I know which ad it is (if my adtracking script is correct!!).

I also know that the particular ad pays only 0.10$ even after the 1$ dollar click!

Where am i wrong? If this advertiser (whichever!) is the highest paying why is it not displayed always?

    cheers
    prasad..

Remember there're quite a few fluctuations these days due to the hazy changes to AdWords, I've had a few crazy clicks pay fairly well in the past week or so. Overall payouts are up!

Do you mean ads at the top of your site pay more than the ones on the bottom? The top ones do pay more on a number of my sites

While it would be in Google's best interest to display the Highest Paying Ad first, I'm pretty certain that this happens on Searched Based Adsense. Content based Adsense is much more geared towards keywords. So for example if you're using a 728x90 do they put the highest paying ad on the left, right or in the centre. Who knows, I'm pretty sure that if this was the case we'd all have a much higher EPC :p

The basic algorithm Google uses to rank ads is CPC * CTR. So if ad #1 has a CPC of $1.00 and a CTR of 1%, and ad #2 has a CPC of $0.10 and a CTR of 20%, ad #2 will be ranked higher than ad #1. This generates more revenue compared to just putting the highest CPC ad first.
