Hi guys, sorry I went away after posting. Just got around to viewing the responses.
For one, the (idle) domain has been turned into a landing page by the registrar
and the webpage offers more than 200 links/sublinks.

The name is a play on the famous book "the joy of sex", not intended!
But more to the point, it alludes to the The Sarbanes-Oxley compliance act (SOX for short) passed by
    the US Senate, post-Enron.

Well, let's see your assessment, in the light of this clarification.

Well, we seem to be going up in value. This is the first response.
    Thanks GorrilaZ
Suggest you long on to the webpage, and then let's see more revised estimates. Thanx

I thought it could have been aimed at red/white sox baseball teams? Maybe a fan site? Might boost its value a little

Thanx again for your response. Now this is a different question
(maybe I should post it on a different thread...)

Currently, I haven't got around to developing the web site. The domain registrar has put up landing page, with dozens of links, each leading to
a page with different generic categories (Homes For Sale, Apartments
Dating Services, Travel Guides...etc) While Alexa does not show
any statistics, I feel that the page is drawing a good number of
    hits and ppc.

The revenue in this instance is being pocketed by the registrar.
Now, is this legal (I would think this is unethical), he has not
sought any permission from me. The domain is owned by me.
    Would you call this cybersquatting?

Secondly, what are the remedies, can I direct him to stop putting up
    his web page?

Let me see, I do have a brain. Although I admit
I am definitely not worldly-wise as you are.
The point I wanted to make is that
I have registered dozens of domains, (95% are current, unexpired)
and each one has a landing page, put up by the registrar.
I spoke to one full-service provider (domain, web-development and
hosting) and he said I can expressly forbid the registrar from
cashing in on my domain, in this way.

Don't worry about the renewal, that's being taken care of in bulk.
Thanks for your advice. Don't forget to keep your cool, Chandan.

once the domain expires you are not the owner and there is 99.99% possibility is DNS will be set to registrar's choice

you can check in name.com when domain registered they will set auto landing to some ads page
(u must set default name servers other wise they will use their landing page )

any way i thought you forgot abt renewal and simply wasting time so just replied roughly dont mind :)

also that domain expired on jan 30 so i believe u have to give 175$ extra + reg fee to get back :(

No I never forgot that I had to renew it (which I did)

You have a 45 day window, after expiry to renew the domain.
Renewal during this time is done at regular rates. No extra charges

Can you suggest a good inexpensive web designer and hostng company in India.

if r u looking for india data center then it will be very costly :(

and most of indian hosting companies are resellers of us , uk hosting companies only :D :D

btw it seems you have not set the dns name servers and the registrar using for his benefit ;) i dont think it is a mistake by him its just a simle business trick for all registrars

also have you changed dns name servers ?

Well, to be honest, where would you suggest I redirect
the name servers? I don' have any other account
    besides this registrar.

Thanks for the support. Appreciate it.

    hmmm, funny.
The first thing that came to my mind was the "Boston Red Sox" (a very popular Major league Baseball team that one the World Series this year) I think that is probably a little more popular then some compliance act.... :) probably would have more luck branding it that way.

Good luck at any route. :D
