evening all, first post here... use a couple of other forums but this one seems more active !

anyway, quick Q, i was looking around for something yesterday and was reminded of the thegoodwebguide.co.uk , so, i submitted a site for inclusion just to see what happened. According to TGWG they only allow a handful of sites go through to be listed on their site.

The one i submitted was accepted. The reason given was ' i think our visitors would like the range of goods on offer'. Which is far enough as the site sells a lot of unusual stuff. But, as with all these sites, there is an 'admin' charge of £250 for inclusion, and I dont want to advise the client to go ahead and purchase it if it wont really benefit them.

However, as far as these kind of sites go, i always thought TGWG was one of the top ones. But on the other hand, i cant stand sites like ISIS which give 'confidence seals' to websites purely based on who can afford it, and seem little to do with the site itself (Isis 'meet our standards' requirements are an absolute joke).. yet.. web muggles see the seal and think 'this site must be safe' or good etc.

Anyway, heres the blurb from TGWG.
"Our visitors are 60/40 female/male and aged between 25 - 54 with 80% of our traffic being UK based. Generally we have 7500 uniques visits a day. We have 27000 members to whom we send our weekly newsletters, many of whom are journalists who work for newspapers and broadcast media. On joining the database, we would send the company a Good Web Guide recommended site logo to display somewhere on the site."

So, what do others think? are sites like these really just paid editorial on a good domain name? or does the inclusion and logo actually benefit the receiving site and encourage conversions?
The receiving site is currently receiving around 6000 visits a month, 95% search engines.
