vista was dead a LONG time ago.

heres a story from April last year Dell offers XP again amidst Vista complaints

Microsoft was always able to twist the arm of the big system sellers (like dell) and force them to use the latest OS and make drivers for it, vista has seen that trend change and some big sellers are rebelling.

On another note, microsoft is shooting itself in the foot by making vista harder to pirate... how? well why go to all the effort to switch over to linux when you can get windows for free (at home anyway). not anymore....

I actually feel a little bad for microsoft.... I mean they go to all the trouble of re-programming vista from the ground up (because of the incident with the chinese hackers obtaining the windows 2000 source code which also means XP too because XP was based on windows 2000 code) and it backfires for them. Microsoft will probaly see its profits drop from 2million dollars every minute to about 1.9million

Very true Microsoft will force companies to do what it wants in the ways of drivers because dell (and other big companies) currently rely on microsoft

Vista does stink. I wouldn't have it if you gave it to me.
If you are stuck with it, there are many tweaks you should do to speed it up and release memory. There are many processes running that don't need to be.
You can also speed up the performance by using the "Enable Advanced Performance" option in the Device Manager. Right click the drive and go to Policies.

The worst os by far would have to be Windows Me. Vista isn't that bad it just doesn't do what people want it to so they don't like it. It is a little slower then xp but there are plenty of ways to speed it up. the only problem I have with it is a lot of programs don't work 100% with it yet.

UFO: Enemy Unknown is a great game indeed
But DOS is a mess, no multitasking, no multiuser, no hardware support, nothing...
And why do you talk about nowadays viruses? At its time it was vulnerable to everything.

    Windows ME is the worst.

Vista is too buggy and unstable right now. I find anyway. I don't think service pack 1 will solve enough problems.

It has over 1000 bug fixes. If you think back to windows xp service pack 1 didn't really help anything either.

Windows Me, the worst OS ever, DOS of course, can't be compared, but remember it was the first brick that built the bigger fortune ever

I agree, Vista does suck. But with alot of Linux distros, you must confirm sudo and root password as well, but noone complains about it in Linux. The truth is, that is helping make it more secure, so I wouldn't be complaining much about that. I'm sure Mac users as well have similar things happen, as well, I'm sure you can disable it in Vista.

Vista does run slow as hell and demands too much from a PC, expecially when you have people who want to run high end video editors and multimedia, Vista is not a good OS for doing so.

I also hate the scrolling programs menu. They are attempting 'flashy' with that but are going about it with ancient technology. That, and it sucks to have a large list of apps constrained to a small box.

Vista also isn't radically different enough from XP to be worth the $200+ they charge for it, expecially when you must upgrade your PC inorder to run the damn thing.

A good OS should provide a confortable environment for you to manage your applications and perform regular tasks. Vista only slows your production. I would stick with XP or go to Linux.

I personally use Xubunutu because its lightweight and free. My PC doesn't need a lightweight OS in any respect, but because I use one my PC performs that much better. It is also easier for me to setup a hosting environment on my PC to test locally from. I know you can get WAMP or whatever, but even still the paths are structured like Windows paths and run into problems at times.

I recommend anyone with any interest in Linux to check out Xubuntu ( a lightweight official form of Ubuntu ). If you want nicer visuals and flashy GUI, go with Kubuntu or Linux Mint.
