Talking about self hosted blogs here... I have a question for anyone who is using the WP 2.7 RC1. Has it seemed to slow down your blog at all? It's weird, because in a blog I am developing I put 2.7 on it and it has been slow as hell. However, my 2.6.5 blog loads fine. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me?
You're not alone. I've experienced this issue as well. It's not all the time though, just sometimes. And it's mainly while logging into the Admin control panel, or doing a post or page. I sent an email through their list about it, most said it's probably a plugin or the host's server. Since it don't happen all the time, I basically just assumed it was the host's server. I'm not really sure though, but I'm kind of thinking about going back to the 2.6.X version of WordPress. It's a shame, because I've been using Trunk versions all this time for "testing" reasons for them.
Yeah, that's for 2.7 to be ON WordPress.COM, for their users. WordPress.COM uses MU software. That's not technically for any and every WordPress user though. The 10th probably sounds about right for their full blown official release for EVERYONE, not just WordPress.COM users. But still not sure though, Ryan said sometime next week. Hadn't really given the exact date yet so..
Is that possible to do without uninstalling and installing again? I think I may do it, because I'm loading both blogs at the same time and the 2.7 one is always 10-15 seconds behind it. It's ridiculous.
Yeah, it should be just fine. I've done that on my girlfriend's blog already. I originally installed the 2.7-bleeding on her's, then downgraded to 2.6.3 at the time. I think really, the only thing about it (downgrading), is that you'll have left-over database columns, tables or what-not from the 2.7 RC1 install. Which of course, if you're using 2.6.X version, it won't matter anyway because it won't need it (2.7 database tables, columns and etc). If you want too, you could do a fresh install of 2.6.5 on a sub domain, import the content, comments, blog roll, categories and such FROM the 2.7 INTO the 2.6.5 version... make sure everything IS there first, then.. delete the 2.7 blog copy... Then move all the 2.6.5 files UP to the root/ where the 2.7 stuff was originally... and just change the URLS in the database... to instead of pointing to the sub domain, it would be the root... Sounds complicated but really it's not. I just go into the sub domain name database copy... manually change the HOME / SITE URL fields from: blah.mydomain.com to: mydomain.com Then go into the FTP directory, select ALL files /folders... and move them out and into the root. Bang done.
That's the way I was thinking, but I'm going to wait it out for the final WP 2.7 release and see if that helps at all. Thanks though.
oh man.. i JUST upgraded to 2.6.5 the other day! I think i'll sit back, let everyone else deal with all the bugs, and wait for Plugin support - THEN upgrade.. around May'ish...
@Pandemix, that sounds good to me. It's worth a shot, and see if things are actually improved. @Tearabite, as MeetHere as said, MOST plugins should work fine after the upgrade. Usually the decent plugin authors update their plugins right along with WordPress, when they make "changes" to their code. However, of course, there's always that handful that don't right away. But, the news of 2.7 has been out for a while now, so I think it gave a lot of plugin authors the time they needed to update their stuff. IMHO, it's still best to wait it out though. Especially if you use a lot of plugins on your site. And of course, you can always keep checking out the 2.7 Compatible Plugin list as well. To make sure all of yours is listed there, BEFORE you even attempt an upgrade to 2.7. Same goes for themes that are made / compatible with 2.7, which can be found here. Here's another useful area to read as well. I've been running "Trunk" since they've started it, I'm usually always on "Trunk" copies. Being that I'm a "wordpress tester". And after they'll release 2.7 version, they'll be starting on 2.8-bleeding for "Trunk". But, I've been doing it for so long now, I'm frankly getting tired of doing it all. And I just don't have the time like I used too. They keep slapping NEW stuff / features in it, and swelling it up to be so huge, rather than lite and speedy like it used to be. I'm tired of going day to day, by chance that something might go haywire. But, it's personal preference really, I guess, so...it's whatever makes you happy. If you're a gambling man, upgrading is for you. If you're not a gambling man, I'd stay away from the Casino. LOL! P.S. Their plans for 2.8 are to work more on the Media Gallery / upload stuff and the "Write Post" Text Editor stuff. As far as I know.
I'd love to know what has happened to the option of static front page. You can stick a post but the previous option of reading/choosing a page/post to stick to the front has disappeared Leanne
Hi Leanne, I just checked in my 2.7 demo blog, and I'm seeing it there. Under: Settings > Reading > Front page displays: Your latest posts A static page (select below) * Front page: * Posts page Is that what you mean?
This just became 2.7-RC2. Expect an announcement soon, for the RC2 release. Hopefully it is fully released within the next couple of days!
wooho, its out officially and they say http://wordpress.org/development/2008/12/coltrane/ "Nearly every task you do on your blog will take fewer clicks and be faster in 2.7 than it did"
I finally downloaded it, it looks like an awesome new dashboard with more posting features such as hiding author, categories, etc..
I found a bug in WP2.7 that makes it not very friendly to offline clients such as WLW (Window Live Writer). http://wordpress.org/support/topic/224028 Hope they'll fix it soon.
