The Web Is Dead?

    Hello everybody,

Lately, there has been some buzz about the future of web.

Some say that the web will go through the same five phases that every technology in the history has gone through and that the web is now about to change completely.

There was a great article in Wired last year that already laid the foundations.
(Must read, if you haven't yet: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/08/ff_webrip/all/1)

What will be the next big thing? Are you already rearranging your business for the future?

I think it's clear that some really big changes are taking place at the moment. Do you see it in your business already?

The web is different then technology. It is not something you can physically touch. It constantly gets updated. Unlike a piece of tech that can get old in a month. The web is always changing. So IMHO no, the web is not dead.

Hehe what a load! Methinks that someone is just posting an article there because they are short of material :D

No, the web is just starting to evolve, is far from dying and is shaping the future of businesses.

Ha, I agree...first time poster...I read the article. It is basically saying the WEB is dead. It says "You’ve spent the day on the Internet — but not on the Web." Aren't they one in the same. I goes on saying how we only use applications now, which connect via internet. Yet we don't use the web anymore. How do you think most people use the internet?? How did you post that topic? Not through an application. You browsed the WEB and found DP and posted didn't you? So how is the web dead?

Without reading the article, I can say that the web isn't dead, the people that are using it are, or at least they are brain dead. Google used to control everything we see, but at least it was (somewhat) democratic and efficient in letting you find what you were looking for. Now what you are looking for finds you!

Good for marketers with deep pockets for advertising, good for the sheeple that just want to sit on facebook and spend money all day, but bad for those looking for non corrupted information. Over time, this is only going to get worse as big corporations further control what you see and governments worldwide rape us for more tax money.

Goldman Sachs owns a major chunk of facebook, online poker is dead, and obama wants to be your friend, this world (including the Internet) is going to hell in a hand basket.

Call me jaded, but that is how I feel.

The web is definitely not dead, if anything it's expanding even further into our every day lives. Just because the web is being used in new and different ways doesn't mean it's dead.

The Internet or "web" has until recently always been a thing that people accessed while sitting at their computers and thus has been associated with that for many years. Now, the "web" is being used a lot more as a gateway for interconnectivity between people, devices, and anything you can imagine.

Web is a little saturated - many ways to interpret "dead".
Next big thing - it is still happening now, thats social and mobile

There is no way the web is dead; the internet is one of the most important inventions in history because almost everyone in the developed world uses it and it is constantly be updated unlike other technology. There is such a variety of things to do on the internet that it cannot die.

The technology will change everyday but I don't think the web will change anytime soon.. At least not for the next few hundreds years. We might change the way we go online.. like pc, ipad, and etc. but yeah we'll see what happen.

Sounds like needing news to me. Same thing with TV news all of a sudden reporting MRSA, which is around people every single day... the pond must have been a little dry that day :D

Maybe I should explain my thought a bit more.

I was thinking this from the IM point of view.

We are now in the consolidation phase of the internet development. In this phase, most of the traffic, money, users, etc. are sucked up by the key players.

Google doesn't want your money if you spend less than $10,000/month, people are using mostly Facebook...
At the moment, they are the best sources of traffic. But keep getting more and more closed.

With these monopolies around, it gets tough for the average IMer to keep going.

I absolutely agree. I'm very excited to see the new domain name layouts though. It'll be a whole new experience with so much more liberalism for our imagination...
