You can blog for free using the free blog facility at the wordpress site. However, if you use the paid version after hosting your domain with a good host you will be able to use several additional features. You will also be able to monetize your site or blog with Adsense or others.

The other replies have pretty much said it, but I'll try to make it more clear.

You can blog for free using Wordpress.com, but you have limited features. One of the most important is that you can't use Google Adsense.

To display ads, you can "self-host" your blog using Wordpress.org, which requires paying for hosting and a domain name.

Another option is to use a free Blogger.com blog, which does allow you to display ads.

Geesh, who is paying to use wordpress?

The wordpress script itself is free to download and free to use.

Only cost would be getting a domain and hosting.

WTF are you guys talking about? Anyone can go to Wordpress.org and download Wordpress for free. Yes, you will need something to host it on, and a domain..but that is not paying for Wordpress. You need those things for any website.

Wordpress has 2 types - self hosted version and the free wordpress dot com version. The self hosted wordpress installation gives us tremendous flexibility to control our blog as we want, while the wordpress dot com version being free does not allow complete control.

We cannot put ads on the wordpress dot com version as well as we get an sub domain of the wordpress dot com address as our blog address. On the self hosted version, we need to pay for web hosting fee that is avg 5 - 6$ plus a domain for a year that is around $10 now. SO with this minimal investment you can start a blog of yours from which you can easily cover the invested amount in 2 - 3 months if you work hard on it.

Hope you got the answer of your question :)

When I hear this question I just automatically think it's asking "I want to make a blog and display ads, do I have to pay any money at all." Maybe not fair to translate the question as such. You obviously don't have to pay to use the software, and I tried to say that, but yeah, you're right. A lot of our responses here could be very misleading. My bad.

The big issue when doing self-hosting using Wordpress.org's script is that you have to learn how to secure the blog, administer it (e.g. backups), deploy new versions (even if you are using Fantastico), how to use Adsense, finding good themes, etc. The startup learning process takes time so be prepared to invest the time. The benefits are that you have lots more flexibility on what appears on your blog.

WordPress is a a free blogging software, that you can download and install in your server to build a blog. But you have pay for a domain name and webhosting. It is now not expensive, unless you choose VPS. Do some google researches about reliable hosting, and they usually offer one domain name for a lifetime.

If you want to blog with WordPress for a completely 0 cost, you can blog in WordPress.com, but then, it has limitation, e.g can't install plugin, monetize with adsense, etc.

    WordPress is free.
But you have to buy domain and hosting.

    If you use wordpress.com
you have to pay before you can add ur own ads.
