The Update still goes on!

    Hey All,
I just wanted to state that I am still seeing huge changes in the Google Serps. I know many were saying it is over. I say it is far from it.

I had a site drop off around december 14th for no apparent reason. This site has shown up in the top 10 for some of the most competitive ppc keywords. Well after a month or so, it came back and is now stronger, and ranking better than ever! So that is cool.

On the other hand, I have another site that I haven't changed one thing on for months...or even a year. The ranks and terms have been up and down like crazy. Today the site is ranking better for terms too.

So what I am saying is, the Google Update Dance is still going on. I am aware that the dance is "always" going on, but usually for me the changes are minimal. They are still drastic changes so I see a lot of people still leading to be upset and happy with drops and falls.

To all, Good Luck. Google Owns You!:)jk

this update isn't like any other update before. seems like there're a few (2 or 3) different SERPs on different datacenters. The next update would be interesting.

Well these results are night and day different on 3 DCs or so, not like in the past where they were only slightly different.

I would agree with your Crazy Rob that NO, the update is never over any more. I see the serps always changing, but at certain times the result changing fluctuate much more than others. So while the average is 1 or 2 spots up or down constantly, in december I watched keywords drop off the map completely and a month later come back stronger than ever.

So I would say that this is a "hardcore" update. So as the serps are always changing, they must have some scheduled big updates that occur at random. The past 2 months have been very intersting.

It will be interesting to see what the outcome of all of this is in another month or two.

I have one site that hasn't had any changes go from the #400 range to #5 our of 10 million (very competitive). That site keyword rankings have been very stable for the last week.

Another site of mine has been #1 or #2 for a year for a keywords with very little competition. A total of (4) high ranking keywords for that site and have completely dropped off the keyword tracker about a week ago.

Even though the keyword tracker shows all (4) keywords as not ranking at all, a manual search shows them as high as #1. I know different data centers are the cause, but it has been this way for a week..... it's odd to be #500 on one data center and #1 on others. I've never seen anything this drastic before. Since these keywords are non-competitive, it must be a filter of some sort. I'm thinking it may be duplicate content caused by text links from other sites I'm listed on, or google is trying to filter out results that come from text links that refer to the same site?

For instance, the typical google results used to look like:

    #1 My Domain
    #2 My Domain
    #3 Competitors Domain
#4 Gimpsy site that had link to My Domain.
#5 Another site I exchanged links with pointing to My Domain.
    etc.
    etc.

Could google be trying to filter results that come from ANY and ALL sites that points to a specific domain in order to limit the amount of results per page that are just text links pointing to the same site?

    OK, one more time...

There are still 6 Datacenters that have yet to be updated with this last Backlink Update info. These same datacenters do NOT reflect Googles algo change either.

If you do not understand how Google uses the Datacenters, I have written and article that may be of help.

    About Google Datacenters

I have been recording results for one page/one keyword across the Datacenters since this most recent Google EVENT began on Feb 3rd.

I also noticed as some others have reported, wild changes is allinanchor ratings as well. This phenomenon is unpresidented in previous updates.

Yesterday, I discovered that whatever changes Google is making, they most definately are applying them to entire IP C-Blocks of Datcenters.

Here are two tables (warning to the faint of heart - there are lots of numbers here)
please note the Key at the top of the tables so you will understand my use of symbols.

    Google Update February 2005

    Feb Update by C-Block

Note: I continue to update these tables so bookmark them and feel free to check back to see how things are progressing.

I'm seeing very different results depending on where I search the web from. At home through residential cable internet I get something quite different than through my work's commercial quality OC3/whatever it is they have.

Both my work and home are located in the same city, about a 15 minute drive from each other.

I thought it might be because my company's block of IPs is being shown to google as allocated to a US based company, whereas the residential service shows as being canadian. (I'm based in canada).

    leif,

Are you just going to www.google.com or are you going to an individual Datacenter?

That would make a difference. Not to mention that Google results have been all over the place for the entire month of February.

If you are not certain how Google serves up results or are unsure of what role Datacenters play in "normal, every day searches", you should read the article, "About Google Datacenters", that I linked to in my previous post.

So if i am ranking low on few and high on few others and if i have been climbing since February 3, can I assume that the best pssition will be retained ? How hopeful can i be ?

Until recently, I had a site ranking in the top 20 for the exact keyword phrase that appears in the domain name. Then the ranking suddenly fell off the map, according to the DigitalPoint keyword tool and my own manual search in Google.

I checked out the McDar Datacenter Quick Check tool and found that a few of the locations rank the site as #15 for the keywords, but a majority of the locations don't. Do these results suggest that my site should once again appear at that #15 ranking in DP and my own search once all the datacenters have been updated?

In all honesty, you can be as hopeful as you want to be :) No one here can say with any degree of certainty where people will be when the update has finally calmed down. (Unless we have someone here who is an internal operative at the googleplex LOL )

I was just going to www.google.com, but it was interestingly consistent both at work and home, as well as being consistently different. It looks like work and home are generally pointing at 'similar' data centers now in that the results have calmed down.

No more #8 at home and #403 at work.

    :)
