I don't feel a need to be in slot one or two, but I hate to be past page one if I can avoid it.

You need to be on the first page, #1 to #3 usually cost too much compared to the rest so I always try to stay around #3 to #6, it flucuates during the day as those with a small daily budget get taken in and out of rotation. Don't take much notice of the first few hours as most ads are live then, after that it settles down and if your budget is high enough to take you through the day then your ad will move up a few positions.

For one of my products it's been costing me $1.07 to hover around #3 and I have a very high %CTR. A month ago it cost me .97.
Now I am struggling to stay on the first page at that price, in fact at the start of the day I am on the second page.

That just shows how the price is being driven up. If I can't stay on the first page I will drop Adwords for that product, it's just not worth paying more.
Google are making more money from my ads than I am  . Thats not how it's supposed to work.

So Cyclops, If you keep falling off page one, before you ditch adwords for that product, do you spend any time scouting for cheaper keywords, or do you do that pretty thouroughly before starting and therefore feel confident in dropping adwords?

    Hi Mr Tut,
Those are for my main keywords, the ones that get clicked, have a good % score, and convert well, It's taken about four months on that particular campaign to refine and develop my keyword list.
I have a whole lot more keywords for the same product that are cheaper but they don't have a very high conversion rate.
It really goes back to this post which explaines how I tweak my keyword list.

I've registered yesterday, setup 2 caimpaigns (1 active and one currently paused (I'm still setting it up). I had been waiting for maybe 5+ hours to see if I would get any results (yea, I'm quite interested in the results) but got nothing. I was wondering how so I started checking the different tool Adword offered, used the Ad diagnostic to realise someone else (an higher bidded) was already using the same display url.

What do you guys generally do when this happen? Do you make yourself a landing page and put the display url to that url or would you "word trick" the display url (put a diffent display url than the one tell be redirected to)?

Tricking google is a very short-term solution, if it works at all. Landing page is my fallback.

Well, it's not to trick google, but to display something else than the real url. If you had to sale cars and the website your pointing to is carzusa, this url would be already in use, would you put carsusa or make yourself a landing page?

Well, that is tricking google. You are trying to circumvent a restriction they put in place.

If they allow the ad (and they may not) at first, if you run the ad for any length of time, they will review it and pull it. I've had it happen when I made a typo in the display URL.

So I have been doing this ppc-->affiliate thing since the last few days of january. I will say that it is definately possible to make some good money. You have to find a niche, pick very specific keywords (not broad ones), and see what bids you can get away with in order to get a good ROI.

Here are the results from my widgets affiliate sales:

Number of hits to affiliate page: 44621
    Number of conversions: 2050
    Total revenue: $19,813.75
    Total advertisment: $6,365.05
    Total Net Revenue: $13,448.70
    Total running days: 84

This started as really a test to see what I could do with it and it has turned out to be very successful. I am certainly not the most successful, but this is one campaign I have running that is quite successful.

I think sunchy is a much bigger affiliate and could answer your questions better then me, but if I could help anybody fairly new, just ask away. I learn stuff everyday from people and want to give back as much as I can.

So you've runned a campaign which highly specific keywords and got good results. What kind of highly specific keywords are you talking about? 3 words keywords or something like it? One example would be great (doesn't have to be your own niche)

I've been doing it just about as long and been no where as near as successful! Well done! You are obviously being a lot more aggressive on the ads than I am .
    Congrats

If you wanted to sell cars, you would bid on "red hatchback mustang," not on mustang. Most of the specific keywords are 2-5 words. Of course you don't sell cars on the internet. It is pretty basic stuff you read anywhere.

I started with 2 grand, then used February's income to increase the amount of traffic, and so on and so forth. I didn't want to use too much regular money on this, so I am going to see how high I can go with only that two grand start.

Congratulations on your success Matt! Do you use a program like CJ or CB, or are you working directly with a company whose product you promote?
