I found this info from neilsen. Here are my thoughts, the companies they track have MASSIVE marketing budgets. If these companies are spending their money on these sizes, it might be wise to follow their lead.

Ad Type, Size, Number of Unique ads using this format

    Leaderboard (728x90) 19,176
    Medium Rectangle (300x250) 12,393
    Full Banner (468x60) 11,674
    Wide Skyscraper (160x600) 10,299
    Skyscraper (180x150) 7,211

Question for you, are you using any of these sizes with adsense?

I use most of the sizes, but you do not include whether it is banners or text ads (most of mine of text)

hmm,, i have found the best by far for me to be 336 x 280... it has outperformed the others by 10 fold for me..

but then again I guess it just goes to show " different strokes for different folks" lol

AdSense released their own list of what they found the top three performing ad units were as of July 2005 :

    336x280 large rectangle (four ads)

    300x250 medium rectangle (four ads)

    160x600 wide skyscraper (five ads)

A bit more info here about where the information came from.

This matches more closely with what I have found to be the top performing ad units based upon my own AdSense testing.

I do only use the leaderboard, the normal banner and the different rectangles. For me all the vertical ads like the skyscraper have performed very badly so I stopped using them (for design reasons as well).

This thread is somewhat useless. Everyone is going to use something different according to the layout of their site. What is the purpose of this thread?

how do you consider what the big G and other marketing research companies telling you what the best performing ads and their performance are is useless?? thats got to be the stupidest comment i have heard in a while.

There has to be some reason as to why these ads perfom better than the others. Maybe it would give people an idea to change their site design to incorporate these sizes of ads to generate a better ctr!

The real question is what is the purpose of your post?

    Hi Millst2,

Up until that post about G and other companies, everyone was simply posting which sizes they use. Useless.

Now that someone finally posted some good info about what sizes and why to use them, I retract my original comment.
