With AI becoming the next thing on the horizon do you think it'll put us out of business/jobs? How do you think what we do will change?

I am conflicted (because I cannot see the future), but take the common examples of the industrial revolution creating efficiencies in manufacturing reducing the workforce in factories or go back to farming when that was what the majority of people did to provide for their families (work) whereas today only about 2% of the jobs are farming due to technology, yet we have more people to feed and are doing a pretty good job of feeding people and employment rates are high. Staying the course with AI; automating the brain activities of humans will result in new jobs that we don't know of yet and yes those that progress will stay employed in a market that looks different than today. To answer the question directly, yes it will put us out of jobs and business will close, but we will find new ways to value a product of man resulting in other jobs. The cool thing is this won't happen overnight, it will be steady progress (though fast progress) and we will adapt.

AI will create jobs - the challenge is to have the skills to be able to do them.

If you're working in a call centre doing Level 1 support then you're stuffed - your jobs will go. If you're smart you'll see the writing on the wall and start getting ready for new career path in an industry that is still going strong or in one of the emerging career paths.

I know a guy who is an aircraft engineer - his site used to be the main service centre for our national airline. It's now cheaper to fly an empty plane up to Singapore and service it there. He has choices - move or find something new. If a highly trained engineer can't relax then nobody can be complacent.

AI is being used very loosely here... Will there be further advancements in technology that can replace the responsibilities of certain humans in certain positions? Yes. Of course...this has been happening for decades now. Cashiers, Tollbooth collectors, Customer Service Reps, Travel Agents etc. You will probably see less people paid to do simple tasks that a machine can do and while this WILL take jobs away it will also free up cashflow to create jobs.

A Mechanic is not going to be replaced with AI. The ability to diagnose problems will be done with AI. It sort of is right now. My BMW reports any issues to the service center and service reps call me to schedule an appt when something goes wrong or when I'm due for maintenance. When I get there they already have a 6 page diagnostics print out from the computer in my car. Pretty cool! This is just the beginning of that sort of AI..... but the guy that actually fixes your vehicle will most likely not be replaced anytime soon haha...

Not replaced entirely but where a workshop used to employ 10 guys they can now get the same workload done with, say, 5.

What happens to the other 5 guys?

I had an Audi until last year when it committed suicide on me - the entire engine had to taken apart just to do a quote and see the extent of the damage. The Audi specialist I took it to had it on a hoist in the roof of his workshop for a couple of months because he was pushing through the easier jobs - they just don't have to do the whole problem diagnosis thing anymore. In other words, those skills are near to redundant. A modern mechanic appears to be more of a parts replacement guy.
