The Tale of Two Google Geeks

This is a tale of two Google Geeks. Their names are Larry Page and Sergey Brin. This a story of two skinny geeky college kids who through some inventiveness, some hard work and alot of blind luck stumble onto a goldmine known as the Google Search engine. And so for a couple of years the Geeks reigned supreme as Kings of the Search Domain.

But then as always happens (all glory is fleeting) one day greed and a propensity for wanting to fix what wasn't broken overcame our Caped Duo and they succumbed to the darker side of greed and believeing their own press clippings. And so the fall from such supreme heights began. And the two geeks who once had been so lucky now felt attacked on all sides and now PARANOIA set in. A deep sense grew in the minds of the mighty geeks that all webmasters were out to destroy their coveted and much beloved pet. This pet was named PageRank and they loved this ILL CONCEIVED pet so much that they even took out a U.S. patent on their pet so that nobody else could have such a screwed up system for ranking websites!

Then two big bullies named Yahoo! and M$N came along and spent millions and millions of dollars just so they could supplant the two once mighty Geeks and at long last provide some SANITY back into the search engine domain, which once had been such a proud domain, but do to paranoia and insanity had become a laughingstock as searchers struggled to find what they were searching for. Until one day, our two Geeks decided they had had enough and sold out to a guy named 'Bill' and the last time anyone saw them they were laughing all the way to the bank at how two SKINNY, GEEKY COLLEGE GUYS who gut LUCKY could pull the wool over so many people's eyes and make a cool billion or two over such a screwed up methodolgy called PageRank.....

Moral of the tale: these two guys could care less at how bad their search results are and only care about making billions of dollars. So long as searchers keep using Google and accepting such poor search results these guys will just keep gettng richer and richer and laughing all the way to the bank. The Google search results are a complete JOKE - they have become like the weather in my home state of Michigan - people here are always saying if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes and it will change - ditto the Google SERPS, if you don't like what you got the first time, wait 5 minutes and try again and again maybe eventually you'll find what you are looking for but dont count on it! :D

Hey, if I could create a search engine with bad results and make a couple of billion in the process....... I'D BE THERE!!!!!!

//wouldn't work for me though. I would do the same things they did
//but somehow end up billions of dollars in debt :p

You shouldn't have to buy adwords.. I think that is the whole point of visiting this or like forums. Anyway, I still allocate about 50 cents / day between Adwords and Overture on just about all of my Internet endeavors just to hedge bets ;-)

Like it or not, Google is the best search engine out there. I've got a bad ranking in them for no reason, and yeah, it's really annoying. But I still can't ignore the fact that in general they give me much better results for what I'm searching for than MSN and Yahoo.

Anyways, if the "geeks" are that greedy, then it only makes sense that they would be most concerned about the quality of their search. If the results fail to be good, less people use them and they make less money. It's insane to think that they would mix up the results to get more money from AdWords. With worse results, that would ultimately loose them money.

Is it also insane to have a linking toolbar that will take content from your site and deliver links to your competition right from your website

A large part of the webmaster community is turning against Google at this time.

Does Google really care about what the average webmaster thinks? No, they never have cared much about what webmasters think, this will backfire against them as M$ and Yahoo will market into this thought process and hurt Google.

You're assuming Google cares (or should care) about you and other web developers. They don't. They care about drawing searchers... that's all.

For the most part, I still find Google results to be better than the others, most of the time. And unless they start serving inferior results most of the time, most people will not switch.

How many searchers know or care that there are 3 or 4 sets of results for each search phrase? How many know or care about smart-links? My guess is not many at all. Therefore, it is a non-issue for Google.

It may be unfortunate, and it may be unfair, but it is unlikely to change in the short term.

Unfortunately, I don't think website owners have much leverage when it comes to search engines. (I think probably all search engines.) Their only concern is searchers. If we don't like something, we just have to live with it. :(

Sure you do, just like advertisers on TV and in the Newpapers do, if you spend enough money on advertising they give you editorial (organic SERP's) coverage along with it.

The future is pay to play!

Have you bought your ADWORDS this month  :p :p

As much as I disagree with a lot of Google's practices they do IMO still return the most relevant results. Yahoo second and MSN third (still have high hopes for MSN).

I think Google needs to strike a better balance between catering for webmasters and normal users. Alienating either party is not good, but you can see why they leave webmasters out in the cold sometimes, unfortunately we are not the party with priority.

I think that they do care what webmasters think. To what level of caring exists I don't know but consider this. Webmasters and computer geeks in general found google and spread the word to the rest of the world. Their family, friends, neighbors started using google. The media started using google. The well deserved hype swelled to create what we see today. The best SE in the world.

It is possible, IMO, for that trend to be reversed if the big G isn't careful. The majority of users still believe google returns the most relevant results but should the tide change they could fall. It will be interesting so see where they are in 3-5 years thats for sure.

I doubt they will fall like I suggest... IF they have the right balance of greed and relevancey in the board room.

I think that they do care what webmasters think.

*the above pulled from the last post*
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

In relation to what? Certainly not how the SERP's are calculated, they could not care less what webmasters think or they would not have screwed up the index since 10/2003. The SERP's after the first 20 results are a "free for all" broader cross section mix of results from a hell of a lot more websites that are not relevant to the keyword search in a lot of cases.

Google knows that webmasters know this and it does not matter to them, nor do they care what we think of the "linking toolbar"

Do they care if webmasters buy ADWORDS?

Hell yes they do and you better start buying if you know what is good for you

Google results look better than Yahoo or MSN to me as far as relevance goes. Harder to manipulate, but that's a good thing.

The new MSN is a complete joke as far as I'm concerned. Any 3 year old can manipulate the results on that. :)

Google is a hell of a lot faster than the others at indexing but that gap will close soon, they also have a hell of a lot more results in the database as dammsie has pointed out.

That does not mean that they are focused as well as they were in the past on the keywords used in the search.
