The State of Online Marketing

    Hi,

I'm a relative newbie to online marketing and wanted to ask the opinions of the members of the board on the state of online advertising.

I've heard reports that online marketing is decline and the stock prices of Google, Yahoo, etc have suffered as a result. But I don't want to take any of this as concrete without conducting my own research; part of which is finding out the opinions of those on the front line.

So what are your thoughts? Is it in decline? Are the falling profits for Google et al a short term problem or is the medium in a state of evolution?

I look forward to hearing your opinions.

Online marketing or online advertising? Both are not the same.

There are news recently that online advertising is on the decline but if you asked me about online marketing, which I think should be perceived as Internet marketing, it is growing as most people are getting online now.

The growth rate may be declining, but it still is a healthy growth. Plus decline in the US doesn't mean decline worldwide :)

Sorry I used the terms marketing and advertising interchangibly - they aren't the same thing - I'm interested in the state of online advertising.

And it's true - it may be the US I hear most about, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world is in the same boat

I am not sure about the state of online advertising or marketing in US. But if you have anything to do with emerging markets like India, have no fear. There is immense growth left. Its a simple logic, current Internet penentration in India is about 3%. Imagine the kind of possiblities out there. Growth rate of Internet users is well over 30%.
With that kind of audience to be tapped, sky is the limit.

We should remember a couple of points:

    1. We're at the cusp of a global economic slowdown. That typically impacts on most industries, marketing and advertising online included.

    2. We've seen an unprecedented explosion in internet advertising simply because over the last decade, the western world has moved online in the millions. Businesses and people have all taken to the internet - so the industry cannot possibly keep growing at that same rate...but it probably won't decline either. And as a previous poster recognised, possibilities are ripe in other developing nations like India and China.
