Visit my country and you will see even more beautiful country and warm people but that doesn't change a fact that in last war some of our people commited war crimes and now they are in Hague on trial or serving their terms in prisons in Europe and over here.

It is really difficult to find sources in english concerning that assassination, but the story goes that he and two others where considered responsible for the attacks on the olympic athletes and that is why he was hunted down and assassinated. Of course that does not excuse the death of a child for me, but Israel wanting to kill it's enemies is not automatically evil for me either.

    Golda Meir

Old age is like a plane flying through a storm. Once you're aboard, there's nothing you can do.

    Golda Meir

but for some reason, Golda Meir, thought that those on the LAA Flight 114, had a LOT to do..

Commenting on the decision to blow up the civilian airliner, Golda Meir, then Prime Minister of Israel, showered Elazar with praise, and exulted, "I want to tell you that I don't just appreciate you, I admire you!"

I have no problems with Israel's actions in this incident. It is very sad that innocent people had to die due to the failure of the pilots to act responsibly. But I do not fault Israel for protecting itself during war from a flight that refused to follow instructions.

Libyan Arab Airlines Flight 114 was a regularly-scheduled flight from Tripoli to Cairo via Benghazi. At 10:30 on February 21, 1973, the 727-224 left Tripoli, but became lost due to a combination of bad weather and equipment failure over northern Egypt around 13:44 (1:44 P.M. local). Lost, it entered the then-Israeli-controlled airspace over the Sinai Peninsula, was intercepted by two Israeli F-4 Phantom IIs and shot down while trying to re-enter Egyptian airspace after refusing to follow instructions issued by the Israeli pilots. There were 113 people on board, of those there were 5 survivors, including the co-pilot.

The aircraft was piloted by a mostly French crew (captain and flight engineer; the co-pilot was Libyan) under a contractual arrangement between Air France and Libyan Arab Airlines. After a brief stop at Benghazi in eastern Libya, Flight 114 continued en route to Cairo with 113 people on board.

As the airliner cruised high over northern Egypt, a large sandstorm below forced the crew to completely rely on instrument navigation. A short time later, around 13:44, the pilot began to suspect that he had made a navigational error because of a compass malfunction: he could not find an air traffic beacon, and could not ascertain the plane's current location. He did not report his worries to the Cairo air control tower. Instead, at 13:52 he received permission from Cairo to begin his descent. In fact, by now pushed by strong tailwinds, the aircraft had drifted east considerably, and was flying over the Suez canal. The previously Egyptian-held Sinai had been occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War.

That day Israel was technically in a state of war with Egypt, but the hostilities were suspended under a cease fire agreement. As a result Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) were on high alert should the cease fire be broken. At 13:54, Flight 114 entered airspace over the Sinai desert, cruising at 20,000 feet. Two minutes later, two Israeli Air Force F-4 fighters were scrambled to investigate and intercepted the airliner at 13:59. The fighter pilots made eye contact with the airliner's crew, and visually signaled them (with hand gestures) that they should follow the F-4s back to Refidim air base. The 727's crew responded by indicating they would not comply and were flying on. The fighter pilots tried one last time to make Flight 114 comply visually by dipping their wings to no avail.

Aiming at the Boeing's wing tips in order to cripple, but not destroy Flight 114, short bursts with the F-4's cannon were fired. The 20mm shells severely damaged control surfaces, hydraulic systems, and the wing structure itself. Flight 114 could no longer stay in the air, and was forced to attempt an emergency landing in an area covered with sand dunes. The uneven terrain proved to be less than suitable for safe landing and when Libyan Arab Airlines Flight 114 came to rest, 108 of the 113 people aboard were dead.

Where did I write anything about warning shots?

"The copilot, who survived, later said that the flight crew knew the Israeli jets wanted them to land but relations between Israel and Libya then made them decide against following instructions."

Stating that the co-pilot, one of 5 survivors, claims that they were instructed to land by the Israelis and did not. Other sources do not mention the pilot at all.

The United States did not support the action. But yes my government abstained from voting for censures. We do that a lot.
The rest of your story I have no disagreement with, not sure if you pointed it out or not, but it was in Sinai during war time between Egypt and Israel, and the UN avoided any sort of censure citing the right of nations to defend themselves. It's a tough issue for me though, if my government had been willing to shoot down civilian planes in it's airspace we would still have two large towers in New York.

Yes i have extensively posted here on dp on the Stern gang with my old debates with Gtech. You see people, we have to stop looking at things in black and white. Most of it is a shade of grey.

    ahh, sorry I misunderstood:

these were to tickle the pilots? or a warning, or to destroy the plane, can you explain?

    No, as I posted above:

Aiming at the Boeing's wing tips in order to cripple, but not destroy Flight 114, short bursts with the F-4's cannon were fired. The 20mm shells severely damaged control surfaces, hydraulic systems, and the wing structure itself. Flight 114 could no longer stay in the air, and was forced to attempt an emergency landing in an area covered with sand dunes. The uneven terrain proved to be less than suitable for safe landing and when Libyan Arab Airlines Flight 114 came to rest, 108 of the 113 people aboard were dead.

So those shots to cripple the plane did exactly that, but did more damage than intended so instead of being forced to follow the fighter jets in a forced landing it looks like they were forced to crash land. If Israel wanted to blow up the plane they could have done that easily.

    Are you dense?

They plane had to crash land due to Israeli cannon fire. They fired their cannons because the plane flew into Israeli airspace during wartime and ignored multiple warnings from the fighter jets.

The facts do not appear that complicated so I am not sure where your confusion is coming from.

What do you think, that Israel just decided, "hey, let's shoot down a civilian jet today. Yeah, that is great for our image, and by killing a planeload of innocent people we will advance Israel's interests."

the source of my confusion is you, and your unclear statements, so now, is it ok to shot down civilian airplanes in wartime?

how can a fighter jet warn a civilian airplane in wartime, if it was not by warning shots, which you said, there were no warning shots?

    1. "The copilot, who survived, later said that the flight crew knew the Israeli jets wanted them to land but relations between Israel and Libya then made them decide against following instructions." How many times do you need to read this to understand that they plane had warning and should have followed the instructions of the fighter jets.

    2. No, I do not have a problem if a country at war is forced to shoot down a rogue civilian jet that is flying into its territory without explanation and refuses to follow instructions. I would hope it would not come to that, but as evidenced on 9-11 one cannot simply assume a civilian jet does not imply a nefarious purpose.

the crew did not know they were Israeli jets, they thought they are Egyptian jets, until they been shot, the black box, shows that they did not understand why they were shot at,

I will make it in points, so you can understand:

1- The plane was in a blinding storm, if you do not understand what does this mean, Golda Meir will tell you:

2- the plane was over the occupied (at that time) Sinai peninsula. not over Israel.
3- The crew thought they are over cairo, and did not know that the jets were Israelis, they thought they were Egyptian.
4- the jets did not make warning shots, they directly shot the plane.
5- the plane when shot was heading away from Israel, not to Israel, so it did not make a threat.
6- Israel denied any involvement in the event, did not even mention anything about the jets, and denied what the Egyptians said that the plane was shot, if they really thought they were acting to defend themselves? why they are ashamed to say it?

If I was a pilot of a civilian jet and fighter jets signaled me to land, you can be damn well sure I wouldn't simply ignore it. Be they Egyptian or Israeli or another other fighter jet.

Have fun arguing about history. Israel did what it had to and you don't see too many flights get lost over their territory.

I do find it amusing that you want to condemn Israel for this action but as usual give a pass when Palestinians hijack a plane. Oh well, I guess when you are losing on every level you are left only with lies to make you feel better.

I m happy there was a black box and they found it, else the truth would have lost, and we would never knew that there were jets at all.

you are back to your well known browntwnian posts, if you see a lie in any of my posts, what are you waiting for? refute it!
