Take a look at the listings in this category http://dmoz.com/Bookmarks/G/goto/czuka-czuka/ ALL the listings were either of POOR QUALITY or ERROR PAGES (403) Does DMOZ keep track of which editor approved a site? because, if they dont they will NOT know who is responsible for the poor quality of the listings in DMOZ. Regards, Paul
Umm...I hate to rain on your parade. But that is a bookmark category - not really part of the actual directory. Editors often use their bookmarks to keep track of sites that are 404 or have other problems, or sometimes just use them as a literal bookmarks folder. Maybe you should do a bit of homework next time before you start making such claims.
The category you're referring to is a personal category called a bookmark. Although it is visible to the public, it is not a direct part of the directory.
There are actually a few great sections in DMOZ. Unfortunately, DMOZ's affiliation with the porn industry gives it a bad name.
I am always amazed how a simple thread can turn to accusations of porn. Is it fun being a parrot that repeats the same thing over, and over, and over again? Wanna cracker?
MY BAD... I had no idea about the bookmarks. Why are they made public anyways? I stumbled into these bookmarks from Google and I was just wondering what if other users went to these bookmark pages without knowing that the sites listed there are error pages, etc.? Wont the user assume that the ODP/DMOZ has broken links and stuff.
David that comment was totally uncalled for and unnecessary. The porn issue has been addressed in other threads, lets keep it in those threads. If you want to voice those opinions you're welcomed to voice them there. I'm amazed that a gentlemen with your credibility would engage in such practices. There is nothing wrong with voicing your opinions, just like Minstrel/Gworld have, but stirring up crap on other threads is unneccessary.
Editors use bookmarks to store sites for a number of reasons. Like monitoring a site to see if a broken link is restored. Or sites that the editor likes even if it they not listable in the main directory. The bookmarks are not indexed so should not result in a search engine result and can only be accessed via the editor's profile page. Stumbling across them is quite unusual. Many editors have a private bookmarks category as well which are not visible other than to other editors - that is preferable for keeping broken links but private bookmarks are not granted automatically, they have to be requested, so not all editors have such an area to play around in.
I believe the bookmarks are included in the rdf though (might be wrong on that). If so, it would be likely to see them popping up here and there.
Bookmarks are not included in the RDF these days. See http://research.dmoz.org/publish/chris2001/odp_reports/report_2005.htm Perhaps they were in the past? I forget.
