Domain Auction Scam that happened with me somewhere in 2006 and its very unfortunate of me that I was not aware of it.

    How it works:

    1) The buyer and the seller are the same entities or friends. If they are friends, they are located in two different countries. This is to make sure that they never get caught.

    2) Seller posts a domain for sale at $700 which is not even worth $10.

    3) Buyer bids on the domain and the sale if completed in less than few hours.

    4) Buyer makes the payment via PayPal.

    5) Seller claims for the funds.

    6) After seller receives the payment from the domain auction website, the buyer declines the transaction.

    7) Last and final, trust me, PayPal won't help you at any cost. Nor they will reverse the payment that you issued to the seller and nor they will assist you.

The above poster to you, has more the kind of scam that I was really highlighing, or trying to, upon this thread, but with reference to domains, always use Escrow.com - it's the best way, without any shadow of doubt!

If any of you do get scammers of the kind that the above poster mentioned, sent to you and you don't know what to do about it, either send it to me here by pm or post it up at 419Eater.com - http://419Eater.com

Would still like to read some more experiences, if that is possible, or user stories.

Thank you to the posters so far.

I had a great one last night, a hitman scammer. (They're the best ones to get, very hotheaded and a rare breed)

It's was brilliantly funny, I got him so well wound up in gmail chat, kept him going for over an hour, winding him up further and further until I thought he was going to explode! :D

Now I'm on his hit list, the men in black are waiting.  :D

Although scambaiting isn't to everyone's tastes, if you've got the mettle for it, it can be rather entertaining and at least whilst I'm winding one of these guys up to absolute distraction, at least this time spent, well over an hour, stopped him from approaching online, more innocent victims who might fall for his antics and vile threats online.

As I said, if you get any trouble at all from a scammer or something that you think is a 419 scam, feel welcome to send it my way and I'll get some very good and very experienced people to look into it and handle it accordingly.

Please keep posting up your stories if you have them.

Not being rude, but if you want to reply more informally, without replying to each question in turn, that's ok, that's not really what I was looking for - it's actually taken me a little by surprise that posters, though appreciated, have so far replied in such a formatted style.

Just write what you think about the subject matter, it's all good.

    Thumbs up.

Friend, I suggest you stay away from these people. There's no guarantee and these people can go to any extent.

Scamming so openly is not a easy task and just imagine why they roam around freely without getting caught. They know all the ins and outs of the technology and they also know how to twist and bend it.

And they are not alone. They have a huge network and they have people and contacts in almost all the countries.

Just a suggestion though. Hope you do not mind.

^ No not at all, that's fine, respect you for saying so.

I'll still carry on though, simply because I'm as stubborn as a mule in my old age and couldn't give a flying monkey's ass for the scammers that do this kind of thing online.

I hate people getting scammed, if I can waste their time, good, that's time spent on me, that at least one individual can't spend trying to scam someone else.

Has anyone ever tried to scam you online?
    Everyday.

What kinds of scam proposals do you receive?
The biggest one is that something is wrong with my bank account...a bank account under a bank I don't bank at.

Which / what kind of scams do you think are the hardest ones to spot?
Usually the ones where you download what looks like a legit program only to find out it has a trojan that tracks your personal info.

Have you ever been the victim of a scam?
Yes, but it was someone stealing my credit card at a restaurant.

Do you receive obvious scam emails in your inbox?
    Who doesn't?

Have you ever tried to tackle the scammers and if so, what did you do?
    No.

Do you feel sorry for the victims of scams online?
No. Our governments across the globe are the biggest scammers and as a result foster scamming as a means for the poor to feed themselves.

What are the 'best' scams online that you have ever seen?
Hiding trojans in items you download.

Do scams make you wary of trading online or to build trust with people that you do not know?
    I'm naturally that way.

What further measures do you think could be taken to combat scammers online?
None. It sucks the internet is full of scammers, but at the same time the restrictive measures the government is likely to impose to prevent scammers, would also be restrictive on those of us who are trying to legitimately make money.

Do you have any scam / scammer/ scambaiting stories to share with the rest of the community here?
I'm not giving anyone any ideas, especially in this economy.

Can you name many of the various scams that exist on the internet?
    See answer above.

Wow, I have been scammed twice. Once was when I bought a CD-rom on Ebay. it was one of those reseller cd roms which you get like 100 ebooks and software all on one CD. I bought it, and I even received the CD. Much to my surprise, the CD was BLANK! It was only $5 but still it was the principle of the matter. Then, after this happened to me, I stopped dealing with EBay.

The second time, I got a lot of fake article writing request when applying for writing jobs on Craigslist. You could tell they were scam artist because they would ask me for a writing sample, in which no one should ask you for if you already have a writing portfolio. It is just so hilarious how people would go through all the trouble just to get a free article, or just to simply write one themselves.
