    how important is the robot meta tag

    what do you suggest if robot tag is added, would it be index,follow or just index

    Use both, it will be better. And even better if you create robots.txt. Robots like to take care about them just like pets ;)

    robots.txt is important for SEs. Let them follow unless you have a page where you dont want them to such as dup content pages.
