The right time to backorder an expiring domain?

I'm keeping an eye on a domain that is expiring soon (if the owner doesn't renew it, but he doesn't have much time) and I would really like to acquire it.

My question is: When should I backorder it? Before it expires or after? Anytime during the redemtion period? Or, as soon as possible and even before the redemption period starts (= before the domain expires)?

I would backorder it if you really want it. But if you were considering GoDaddy to backorder it, that's pretty much useless. I backordered a domain that was expiring - GoDaddy was even the original registrar and I still lost it.

Fortunately I also backorderd it with SnapNames and got the domain from them.

Backorder the domain just before it drops

Use pool.com to backorder the domain before its Deletion Date.
