Does anyone have some hard data/specifics/examples of domains performing better in the SERPS if they have been registered for 3 years rather than 1 year? I'll be registering half a dozen names soon and trying to make up my mind on whether do register them for longer purely for SEO purposes.
Even though Google mentioned using the length of the domain registration as a ranking criteria in their patent filing application I have yet to see anyone produce any concrete proof that Google is actually using it. It just seems too easy to manipulate that I cannot imagine it ever being more than bit factor. I'd save the money.
Like goScooby said, Google mentioned on a patent this criteria for ranking, but it could be only being used for what we know as the "sandbox effect", where you won't even show on SERPs for new domains/websites. Instead of "this older domain ranks better", the aging practical effect can be "this new domain doesn't even rank at all". Patent legalese sucks
But the original post here seems to ask whether it is better to register a new domain for a longer period of time (3yrs vs 1). Don't think that has, or will ever matter.
I have seen 1 year registration domains hit the sandbox and others registered the same day perform just fine. At the current time I do not think it does a difference for how long you register a domain. The site design, content, and links will eventually decide how the site ranks when you put it online or if it goes into the sandbox. Christoph
Pure speculation on my part, but... I think it's only used as a very, tiny, teny small part and than only as an extra factor for sites that are already found dubious by Google. Meaning that if your site follows all guideliness and is registered for only a year there is no penalty whatsoever. If your site already has been flagged for not following certain guideliness AND is only registered for 1 year it just might trip the spam(or whatever)filter. This, to me, is the most logical use for it.
i have seen the site becoming authority site, the site belongs to a client of mine, so cant share URL, but believe me, it helped. The site is online since 2002 and is registered till 2010.
