The Ranking Factor PR or Links or Content For a competitive keyphrase, I just noticed a PR6 site ranking at 3rd whereas the sites ranked at 1st and 2nd were having a PR of 4 On examining its Backlinks, I made the following observations: - The first site had a total of 48 Backlinks, with just 4 links from its own domain and rest 44 were External Links - The second site had a total of 84 Backlinks, with 19 links from its own domain and rest 65 were External Links - The third site had a total of 386 Backlinks, with 237 links from its own domain and rest 149 were External Links N.B: The quality of the external links of the above sites is not very different. At some point of time the number of external links and the internal links (links from same domain) was a big strength for a website. But, the above observation has come as a big suprise! I would like to know your experiences to draw a logical conclusion from it! Thanks for your time!
IMO Google is moving more toward quality than quanity. Other than age of the domain and age of the backlinks again IMO its the quality of the backlinks vs the quanity. I have been noticing this myself over the last couple of months. I too have been seeing sites rank higher with fewer backlinks that sites below them. Based on my observations it appears that the sites with fewer backlinks have better quality links.
A few factors that probably play their part: - the quality of the links - how targeted (on topic) are the pages the links are on? - how targeted is the link text? - is the internal linkage supporting the ranking of the site for those keywords?
vaniaul, thank you for sharing your findings with us. This isn't really a novelty to me. It is all in fact about links. Whilst content is the Ferrari, links are the highway. The weight of internal links is directly related to how the site is perceived by Google. Internal links from sites that are seen has trusted sites carry a great deal more weight. The same of course applies to the external links.
From some of the SEO articles I have read it appears that a sites Pagerank counts for only about 50% of the factors that Google uses to factor the search results, although no on knows exactly the algorithm except google itself.
You're forgetting CTR, times the page is bookmarked, times the domain is mentioned, age, age of sites linking in, and traffic history. PR and Links in are only 2 tiny parts of the whole algo. I would worry more on the above, and making a good site then links.
PR is not a factor for a ranking in google SERP. Yea link does but it should be again quality not the quantity. If u got more links from ur them related sites it help u a lot. Try to get the back links using ur targeted keywords in anchor text. Now comes to content it also a major factor in SERP ranking. Try to write good quality, keyword rich(not spam) fresh content. and a lot of factor used in Ranking...
Hi Vani.. hope you are doing well... There are a lot of factors which affect the ranking ... 1) Quality of links 2) Age Factor of the domain 3) Amount of fresh content that goes into the site 4) How were the backlinks built (they have to be built at the right pace) 5) Proper keyword targetting and variation 6) Bad neighbour hood 7) Dup content penelty 8) On Pagefactors And the list goes on ... If you actually are doing research of some particular keywords for the ranking analysis let me know ... i might be interested in helping you out as this is one thing i love to do (researching not helping out ) Are are you and your hubby coming to Delhi SEO Meet ( We have only few seats left so register asap)
Giving Pagerank 50% is wwwaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy too much....Its more about links, quality of links, the pages you get the links from and anchor text. Remember that the Pagerank you see is the toolbar is horrible outdated and google only updates what you see once every 3 to 4 months while your internal pagerank is updated daily
Hello All, Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences and observations. I agree that Quality of Backlinks are definately a big consideration, which I have also enjoyed for my sites for a long time, untill the recent past. Actually recently my rankings dropped drastically. Now I am working to restore my rankings. Maybe my first step towards it can be: 1. An analysis of the Backlinks of the sites ranking above my respective site 2. Trying to procure a link for my website from where my competition is getting the links already Will this be a wise move to make? Please consider sharing if u think there is anything else that will help!
I think its more about how "trusted" a page where you link is now rather than its googletoolbar pagerank or its relevency. Domain age and the sites own quality links factor into this I imagine. I have seen a study on this someone posted on V7 forums and what he found was that the link pages "relevency" to topic is not that important at least "yet"
even i found the issue and was bit surprised first ..bt later when i studied those links i found the sites though had fewer links they were quality links and targeted links ...and also the link anchor texts they used were the targeting keywords.... by this i came to a conclusion that link anchor texts also play a vital role
Not to sound too harsh, but this is a very lacking analysis, from what you have shown us anyways. What basis did you use for competitiveness? Examined how? Using the site: command in Google? Is that all you did? Run the analysis using the Neat-O Tool. Tell us how many of the links you find for each site use the keyphrase in question as the anchor text. If a site has umpteen million links with the anchor text of [Google], and makes it to a PR10, it still won't rank for the phrase [Nigritude Ultramarine]... and no one would have any reason to expect it to. Quick note on relevance for those of you touting it btw... look at the search for [search engines]. Do you guys really think that the reason the top10 sites rank the way they do is because other sites having to do with search engines, or other actual search engines, linked to them? No. It's because everybody and their brother links to them, regardless of theme of their site. -Michael
