Many webmasters now complaining about google displaying crap sites. I read lot of post about this in this forum and from other webmaster forums. But not only google have this problem, yahoo and msn also have this problem. My Point is that if you want to search a quality site or to get a quality result for your search I believe this days big directories is the best options, like dmoz.com because before a site listed there they manually review it to see to it that the site have quality content. I guess when internet surfer start to see the advantage of using those directories sooner or later they will shift to dmoz or dir.yahoo.com instead of google.
I find a MSN and Yahoo a lot more cleaner when I do searches for my software developement stuff. Google returns a lot of scrapper and amazon sites for me.
I agree with Jeff, I find Yahoo as the best option and then MSN.. but for some keywords Google has good results.. overall i would say that google gives 70% good results yahoo and MSN are almost same as like 65% or sumthing like that.. Most of time we find affiliates sites top in Google.. thats the only problem google is facing these days as well yeah i agree with PinoyIt.. that directories can be good option but for users they are not so use to directories.. you can use like aol or myway they also gives good results these days
MSN and Yahoo seem way ahead of Google on quality results and fast and complete indexing of sites. If I want to get good and new results I won't be using Google and once all the Google fad fades away so may Google.
This post is useless without an example. And nobody is going back to a top-down directory. Fresh content > old sites
I just did a few searches that are business and technology related and got very good results. Things like Adobe, Java, ColdFusion, my employer, etc all turn up good results. If you are looking for Mesotheleoma, loans, web hosting, etc where webmasters chasing easy money tend to frequent than you probably see bad results. What topics were you looking at? Were your sites affected by recent changes?

DMOZ and dir.yahoo.com have both been around awhile; there are advantages to searching them over using the major engines. The average user, however, is unaware or not interested in directories of sites, not to mention there is no real advertising by them, unlike the search engines. Non-webmasters are noticing problems in Google serps, and perhaps we will see a shift in user behavior soon, but I doubt it will be toward directories. More than likely it will be away from the big 3 - to someone like the Pimped Out Search Engine (commercial).
And how do you know that?, they seem not to give a shit at the moment, doesn't matter to them that because of a cock up hundreds of business have gone tits-up.com....sorry for rant, i'm one of the hundreds
It is all relative. Some say google serps are declining while others say the opposite. The only way to be sure would be to conduct a very large survey polling a wide spectrum of people.
Hahaha... yes. Use DMOZ, you'll get all the reliable and excellent results you'd get from a search engine!!! Only they'll be 5 years old, because DMOZ is corrupt and slower than death at listing pages. And I think their "manually review" has a lot to do with who someone's competitors are, who pays for an entry... etc.
Google is the best search engine in the entire world.. No other search engine can stand, not even dare to compete with Google search engine. Google search results are 100% and their services are top notch. Thanks, My adsense publisher acct# pub-567623632532224
Results depend more on the query used than whether a search engine or directory produces "relevant" results. Really, if you're looking for the "top selling hybrid automobile models in [your location]" but query something like "fuel-efficient cars", "hybrids", or "cars in [your location]" chances are you're going to have to sift through a lot of crap before answering the right questions. Besides, of all the search engines and directories out there how often must you reform your query prior to capturing the "correct" answer? More often than not I'd say.
No offense, tell me something you need to know and I will find it for you, and I will do it with the search engines and not with directories like DMOZ.
still Google results are fine and i can find whatever i want to; usually my searches are related to telecommunication, networking and programming and i am satisfied with G
Google is better at finding content-rich sites with many internal pages. Yahoo and MSN find shallow sites with spammy home pages. Just my opinion.
