I am happy with this same server from them. I got it a tad lower and had some extra ram thrown in so now its about the same price. Have had my proxy on there for around 4 months and am very pleased with there support and uptime.

Thats not a bad server, do you really use that much ram? I never need much RAM I have 2GB but I only use 7000-800MB during peak according to MRTG. I've never seen it using more then 40% of the ram. The bandwidth is certainly the most important part. I've used myself almost 3 terabytes this month. So even 5,000 gigs would not be alot. lol

5000gb is 5tb, the month is nearly over assuming PCM?

I was on target to use about 3.5tb last month so theres enough growing room for me

And i have fairly large (compared to most proxies) download limits so plenty of room to cut back also

Its hard to say about the ram the way the os deals with it. i had 2gb before and it was not enough, i went into swap sometimes.

I plan to run a ram disk at some stage to try and speed things up a little, and squid again if bandwidth is running short

Same here. cutting back the bandwidth not something I want to do becuase I'll lose visitors.
I've looked at Theplanet.com and other datacenters before and found there bandwidth is not appealing or cost effective. I think fdcservers.net datacenter is godsend for bandwidth.
Its probably not normal everyday though they get clients who want 5TB of bandwidth for 200 a month. Maby you cut a deal with them if you talk to them on the phone. lol

yes it is not something i want to do, i have had to do it a few times when times got hard and i felt it in my pocket right away as people left. i am still recovering from my last cut back before my new server.

I have only heard bad things about fdc, and nearly all of the cheap unmetered places really

If i was to go down that route, i would like to have perhaps 2 cheaper ones in different locations for when things do go wrong

really, i want 2 eu boxes and 2 us boxes... some day some day

I currently have a 3mbit connection right now which is about 1000gb a month that is constantly and always maxed out...

I am planing on releasing 11 more proxies, currently i have a network of 9 proxies.

Total cost of server + bandwidth to keep these things running smoothly will be around $500/month

Hopefully i can start earning more, does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do in order to earn more? let me know thanks!

I agree fully. Just dont get it why people often go for the cheap prices knowing that they are not as good as the expensive ones..I guess that's human nature but someday one gotta wake up of that idea that cheap is good. If a proxy webmaster seriously wants to take his proxies to new heights without having to worry about slow speeds, downtimes or getting kicked out due to reasons like high ram usage then they outta consider paying quality prices for quality hosting.

Simon, I wont comment much on your plans but at the rate you are selling, once you get lots of signups and proxy webmasters start to use all that bandwidth. You are gonna be facing some serious trouble of having to shut down as you will not be able to cover your cost. So if you are serious about the proxy hosting business and want to last long term, I would suggest you reconsider your plans. Have seen enough fly by hosts so to speak.

I am gonna try out ceoads. The only thing I am weary about that is if they place banners such as "Use a better proxy here" kind of banners from competitors then that's not a good thing.

Does anyone have any tips for promoting a proxy, I tried to make a proxy network last year and I spent more on hosting than i made from the proxies.

I was curious about something, If I tried to sell the domain PrivateTunnel.com with about 300 UV's per day, how much would it sell for? Not gonna sell it though, just curious

I am curious about selling also. I will certainly sit through till about February as everything is going well, however I need to consider my position. What is the average multiplier - 2/3 months?

Also what is your opinion on caching, good / bad? I am unsure whether I should use it or not (Glype 0.5x)

Caching... it certainly helps to lower bandwidth... but, it makes your space VERY high... and with a lot of proxies it's a hell of a job to delete cache from most sites...
