and to people using htaccess to block ipranges, if you have your own dedi/vps (not shared hosting) you should look into proper geoip lookups done via the HTTPD and not in PHP for better speed/less resources


With htaccess EACH request for your index.php (assume this is your proxy.php) has to look up and read whats in your .htaccess file and see what applys to this current vistor, keeping in mind loading the likes of this thread alone through your proxy you will end up making say (for example) 100 hits on your index.php each doing their php work and your httpd looking at that same .htaccess file

this was the way i read it worked, and this is why lighttpd does not support .htaccess

if you have your own dedi/vps also consider lighttpd

 

Very true about the .htaccess meep, Better off using Geoip from maxmind and using glype you can put the code into index.php and it will do 1 look up when they hit the index.php. Anyone in proxy pages would not be having any lookups against any .htaccess file or geoip file saving you some cpu becuase the proxy pages use browse.php which is another file alltogether, now except for anything like phproxy which uses the index.php file to for proxy pages, this would be a BAD IDEA, as it would be constantly doing lookups on the index.php when there in the proxy pages. So if you use phproxy make the file separate. Like say make index.php and it could have the geoip code then if it passes you do a php include with say "index2.php" which would be phproxy.

 

OK so I have to admit that had me for a second. Im sure if google saw something like that they would um raise an issue with it

How do you get more users to your proxy? I have tried submiting them to topsites, but no luck.

 

Most topsites subs are useless in providing traffic. You can try yahoo answers see who posted looking for proxies and you can post yours there. That's one way. i'm sure will be people here to say that proxy topsite traffic is good , i don't trust aardvark script topsites because is a big lie about their traffic in my opinion

 

People say that not using the name proxy in your URL can give you SEO problems..well its not true..jsut use a spin off word like 'Proxee'...

 

best proxy traffic is, let me tell you, from search engines and massive email groups. I have submitted my proxies to like 200+ topsites, and only got a few hits every day. Best topsite would be tech-faq or proxy.org. Only submit to those two
