The power of Backlinks!

I just read somewhere (probably on a blog of another DP member) that quality backlinks/inbound links are the most powerful SEO elements.
The blog said.."even if a site is just a blank page, it can still rank #1 for a keyword on google, if it has high quality inbound links"

Guys? Is this true?? Should I only concentrate on getting quality one way backlinks?

you shouldnt only concentrate on it, but you should concentrate on it

    good examples are

type 'miserable failure' in google and look at the no.1 result

The result is simply from people linking to the whitehouse website with the anchor text 'miserable failure' in backlinks even though the word isnt even mentioned on the page

I would reccommend getting a good range of quality links, but think, imagine getting your link on a 100% relevant niche pr7 site with no outbound links, and the link is in content, now that a link worth paying for.

    One example to illustrate:

    Google Search: Failure

This is how powerful inbound links can be..

Inbound links are so important, it shouldn't be the only thing you focus on, but you should definitely focus on it.

Google always seems to stump me in one area or another. I tried a test campaign on myspace with hundreds of backlinks (obviously not very relevant backlinks).

Got a brand new website a PR4 in a week. 6 months later, still PR4. (and only 33 backlinks left) Unfortunately I didnt check at the time where the site showed up for the main keyword, but as of today, its nowhere in google, #27 in yahoo, and #6 in MSN. go figure.

So in this case, irrelevant inbound links got a good PR, but no actual placement in Google (which i would have expected... but whats with the PR?)

Inbound links is a big part of off-page optimization. For on-page optimization, it basically boils down to your content (how unique) and layout (proper formating of titles, headers, bold and keywords allocation) quality.

Then, would it mean, that for off-page optimization, inbound links is enough?

    Quite right.

What we want are links with relevant keywords :)
For example, We wouldn't want our SEO site to be linked with BlackHat SEO..

In conclusion, no matter what are the off-page optimization techniques that people are using, they are trying to get relevant inbound links.

Concentrate in one way link exchange rather than two way link exchange.
