What is the ideal percentage for keyword density.

Does it vary from one, two, three and four keyword phrases.

And is it a sliding scale.

Is for example 5% to low and 10% to high.

    Ideas welcomed.

Can you give us examples of where you are getting good results based on a 6 - 8 % key word density on Google? I have always read that the density is minimum 8% and Maximum 20%.

    Thanks

I get excellent results in Yahoo with 8 to 10 %, but when i drop it to 5 % my rankings in google improve.

I read that 3 % is optimum for google while 7 % is best for Yahoo. 5 % makes a good trade off.

But it depends on the length of your page too.

A 1000+ word document is much harder to maintain your keyword density. 5 % would mean 50 occurrences, but then you are getting spammy as far as total occurrences are concerned. With these longer pages it is much more important to use more variations of your term instead of the exact term. Even if your final density ends up at only 1.5 % or 2 % for your main term.

A 250 to 500 word page is ideal and 5% would mean 12 to 25 occurrences. This is a lot easier to achieve and is not too spammy. 25 may be getting a tad high, so with these 500 word pages do something similar to what i mentioned for the 1000+ word pages. Shoot for a 3% density for the main term, with a few variations thrown in there.

A page with lots of graphical elements and only a little bit of text content may only have 50 to 100 words. A 5 % density would only be 2 to 5 occurrences. Your density is good, in theory, but with so few occurrences you will need to rely much more on back links to be able to rank well.

I think 20% is TOO much (each fifth wors is a keyword  )

I read that 5-8% is the best.

This FireFox extension http://www.quirk.biz/searchstatus/ has a built in keyword density checker. Simply highlight the word or phrase on the site, right click the mouse, and select keyword density. Shows densities in Title, body, H1/H2/H3, bold text, link anchors, and meta tags

Or this tool here http://www.ranks.nl/tools/spider.html can give a full report of all words and 2, 3, and 4 word phrases that occur on a page.

I'm no fan of keyword density as a hard and fast measure. Just make sure that your key phrase makes an early and several other appearances. And don't forget latent semantic indexing.

Forget about keyword density. It doesn't make much difference at all.

I have heard that on another forum where they basically said don't bother with KD at all. Yet on this forum it does seem to matter.

Like meta tags (other than title) the Search Engines have moved on and KD is no longer relavant?

I agree with people saying that you shouldn't focus to much on Keyword Density. Just remember to include your keywords in titles.

For those of you who are really concerned with the right formula for using Keyword, do this:

Look at the top 10 pages on Google. And then start counting how many time they have used the keywords in their content.

Google are now giving less weight to keywords density. So make sure that you don't over do this, and keep your density some thing around 2.5%.
