are you know what is the oldest search engine of the web?

    The oldest one is "AliWeb".
This search engine was launched in 1993 & it is first search engine in the net.
ALIWEB means Archie Like Indexing for the WEB.

ALIWEB allowed users to submit the locations of index files on their sites which enabled the search engine to include webpages and add user-written page descriptions and keywords. This empowered webmasters to define the terms that would lead users to their pages, and also avoided setting bots (e.g. the Wanderer) which used up bandwidth. As relatively few people submitted their sites, ALIWEB was not very widely used.

You may wish to read the thread What search engine did you use BEFORE Google?

Search engines such as Gopher, Archie etc are mentioned in it as well.

Thanks for sharing. Lycos is one of the oldest search engine that was launched in 1994. It ceased crawling the web for its own listings in April 1999. Lycos no longer crawls the web on their own but provides results from Looksmart

lol..its funny that kids nowadays think google is the only search engine!
    I remember the days before google..and i'm only 23!
When google come onto the scene..I like it and thought great a nice simple SE.
growing into a corporate giant imo has just ruined them.

It's great to be reminded of the age before web2.0...
    green rep to u

    I remember Veronica

    http://www.webreference.com/authoring/search_history/

And it looks like excite, webcrawler and yahoo all predated alta vista, which I didn't realise.

I thought alta vista was one of the first big ones but I guess the founding date counts the time that the garage computer was plugged in and not necessarily the first date it got famous.

    eh?

    According to wikipedia,
the first tool (software) used for searching the web was Archie,
but Wandex and later aliweb was the first web search engine. :)

Archive.com is cool. I like the way you can see the way sites used to look. Isn't there anything else before archive though? I thought google was the oldest to be honest.

The first SE i used was ask and yahoo.
