Alright so I have created a site, added it to social bookmarking sites. Then created a 10 page linkwheel for the site. The site became indexed in under 24 hours. (searched site:http://myurl.info/myarticletitle/) but on serp checking websites, it doesnt rank in the top 100 pages for the keyword it is most optimized for. How long does it take for keywords to take effect in the serps after indexing? Or is there a step I should be taking now. Im afraid to keep adding mroe backlinks.

looks like you have just created the site and built the linkwheel and done the SB submissions. it takes a while to get ranked on google for your keywords so give it a little time. if your keyword is even moderately competitive, then just a 10 page linkwheel and bookmarking will not get you ranked well. you need to build lot more backlinks than that

From what I have gathered, building an extreme amount of links fast is a bad idea for the big G...is this not true?

It is better to build links in a natural way - not too many at once. Comment on related blogs, submit articles and keep adding content to your site. It does take time, but you will get there if you keep working on it:) Also, make sure you have good title tags and keyword density on your site. On-site content is VERY important!

It depends on the competation, besides it unlikely for a new site to rank high in 24 hours, you need 2 weeks or more, and you should keep building backlinks.

You need to give a little time for Google to increase your page rank... Huge amount of links in a short term is not a good idea.
