I think a combination of all seems to be doing the trick for me.

I would say directing visitors to your site at gun point is probably the most effective. Had some of my best traffic days that way.

 

One way quality link buliding- will give you both short term and long term benifit.

 

One way linking. In natural way or buying links. Articles have second priority.
