I would say that there are 2 very critical
    factors in marketing in general.

    1. Know what you want

    - know what you want to achieve
    - know what you want to sell
    - know who you want to sell to
    - know what you need to provide
    - know what type of relationships to build
    - know who you want to network with

Only by knowing what you want can you
have a clear goal and devise your strategy
    around it successfully.

    2. Proving value

    - give your customers what they need
    - give your customers what they want
    - give your customers what they expect
    - give your customers MORE than what they expect

Marketing is about the exchange of values,
you get out what you put in. When you provide
value to your customers, they will give value
    back.

What are your thoughts on this?

I would say...know how much money you are going to make before you start. Many people skip this step and just start marketing then later wonder why they burnout. Monetization projections of the campaign will let you know what you should be spending to begin with, or if you should be spending it. Treat it like a business first.

    Cheers.

I would say that as with any marketing, market research is critical. You may have a good business idea but if the demand is not their you may not succeed as you had hoped.

Well that is traditional and conventional part- looking at existing demand only.
Many success stories are based on about creating new demand/ new markets like the Xerox photocopier or the Sony walkman. :)

    Yes i agree with that.

    Just wondering which are better..
Honest marketing - tell the product as it is

    or

Give them what they want - just tell the product information that the customer want to hear.

    which are better?

I would say give customers what they want. Customers are savvy, but they don't always purchase for rational reasons. Some will weigh the pros and cons between items, but most will buy based on a particular benefit or aspect they liked. They might like the macbook air because it's cute and thin compared to a more powerful PC.

They purchase for things emotional reasons.

So if you're writing an article you have to show benefits then support it with features. That's why the sales copy of a page works so well.

I mean, honestly, which is more likely to peak your interest?

I'm just using an example from a PPC ad I see in the corner:

A: Microsoft FASTforward '09. Explore search's role in helping companies engage their users.

Like anybody gives a rat's about helping companies engage their users. Not very passionate. Definitely not too Direct responsy sounding. And what does that mean anyway, Explore search's role in helping companies...???

B: Microsoft FASTforward '09. Find Your customers before the competition does.

If I were a biz, I'd be very interested in finding my customers before the competition does rather than exploring search's role.

Personally, I think marketers have to be honest.

You can not lie to your customers otherwise you will not survive long term.

You will also have to accomplish how to satisfy your customers by providing what they want.

In short, you have to be both honest and give what the customers want.

The most important thing is to be honest to your customer. Give them what they expect and provide good customer service.
